Adapted from the lauded feminist novel, I LOVE DICK is set in a colorful academic community in Marfa, Texas. I was reading reviews and a little surprised that I got something totally different out of this show. Instead of a couple going through culture shock, I saw a couple in a rut in their relationship and the wife saw something in Dick that made her lustful again, probably for the first time in a long time. She knew nothing about him personally so she invented things in her head and he then felt objectified. I love that irony. Probably how many women feel. Although she uses the inspirational thinking about Dick initially with her spouse, it soon drove her to wanting to have that with Dick. That last episode was awesome. I felt that feeling of learning about someone for the first time when she was going through that with him. And then life just slapped her in the face at the end and although I don't want to give anything away, the ending was perfect...like "of course this is what happens when I try to be happy" is what she must have been thinking. Maybe this show just resonates with those in longer relationships that might be plateauing and for women of a certain age...I guess I fit that bill and really found deep appreciation in this show. Can't wait for Season 2.

Thank you creators... this is a gift to the girls, and some boys - the ones that can do the beauty dance. I'm sure it's not for all audiences; but they're busy watching super hero action movies, still waiting for the hero. ("We don't need another hero.") Thank god for the women making art, the women who've paid close attention to the women who came before.... history is finally catching up. Clever girls. The art direction is great too. Love the light bodies. Oh you must have had such fun making this one.

It took me two episodes to warm up to the series, but once I realized the depth and complexity of the issues it is exploring, I was extremely inspired. Everything about this series is so important particularly in the realm of film where the male gaze tends to dominate the themes we see on the screen. How refreshing to look those themes right in the face and turn them on their head by looking at things from the contemporary empowered female perspective. I look forward to seeing where this series goes. I hope it continues to blast open new inquiry into the blind spots, stereotypes and themes that have dominated society and film and bring new breath and creativity from women’s perspective into the film genre. This series is challenging a paradigm and also takes risks in the way it uses the medium of film so I would not be surprised if many viewers may not relate or even like the series. I hope this is only the beginning of film work done at this caliber in a series. It may not be getting five stars across-the-board now, But when Art takes risks and forges new territories, you can’t expect the popular vote at first. Hopefully this will become a new normal for the medium of the TV series. Excellent work to all those involved.

This show is nuanced and makes a great attempt at realizing the very experimental somewhat biopic that it originates from. I have to say that I do really love Jill Soloway. Transparent is one of my favorite shows and I love how she mixes comedy and drama in a realistic way with characters that are both outliers and people that we have probably known at some point in our lives.
After seeing Afternoon Delight, I am pleased to see Jill Soloway and Katheryn Hahn working together again. I wouldn't say that was one of the best movies ever, but it has one of the most tense climactic moments in a film built around dialog that I have seen in a while.
This new show, I would say may not be for everyone, but it's brilliant. It artistic and intimate. There is an almost visceral sense that comes from the voice over and on screen dialogue as the main character writes her inner most thoughts to Dick. It takes a moment to grasp the visual language that Jill is using such as freeze frames and on screen titles, but all of these together create an overall emotional sense of the main character. It makes me look forward to future episodes. The language that she is creating isn't completely new, but the question is how is she going to continue to use it? If Transparent is any clue, I'm guessing that the future of this show is a bright one. I'm hoping that Amazon chooses to continue the series.

I wish there was more to gauge where a show is going than just one episode. This first foray into Dick-dum was a complete tease, I found it interesting although rather depressing. I would have like to have seen a bit more of the direction. Dick seemed to allude to the male domination of what is defined as art and creativity. I don't know if that is really the direction of the piece. The female lead makes her observations completely sexual and male. There should be no qualifier to being a filmmaker. The female lead should not look at herself as a "female" filmmaker but she accepts the diminutive title in her argument with Dick, listing a handful of great "female" filmmakers. At the same time, Dick points out that if she wished to be a filmmaker she would be one. Her Sexualizing him, in her own way, diminishes him and his comments as purely sexist, rather than seeing the grain of truth. So she has chosen to be a Dick as well, rather than accept the real challenges before her. While it was nice to see Kevin in something different, it appears we are only allowed to see him sexualized through the female lead. It wasn't entertaining. Depressing. A pilot should give us a bit more light to create a reason for continuing to watch. Kevin can carry a show if they let him be more than a one trick pony.

I would go so far as to say Episode 5 "A Short History of Weird Girls" should be watched first as a precursor to the rest of the series. You'll know based on that if this is the show for you.
The performances of Hahn, Bacon and Dunne are outstanding. As well as great performances from the supporting cast. It takes the preconceived notions of sex, love, and marriage and throws them up in the air for you to catch and put back together.
Such a fresh look on old mores and how people deal with them.
