The video is a censored shortened copy of the original. I was very disappointed. Piece of crap. Will give my copy away and buy another one from a different source... NOT FROM AMAZON. DESCRIPTION WAS TOO VAGUE. WASTED MONEY AND TIME. I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO FIND AN ORIGINAL, BUT I WILL KEEP LOOKING. VERY DISAPPOINTMENT IN AMAZON.

This film was shocking when released but grudgingly acknowledged as a "masterpiece" of cinema, albeit verging on pornographic. Now, sadly, the DVD edition is shocking in how extensively altered it is. Whole scenes are missing; others are so cropped that the plot is indiscernible if you don't know the stories. This DVD is an exercise in frustration for the viewer, who is hard pressed to figure out what is going on, with no apparent redeeming artistry left. I really shouldn't have wasted my money....
Movie 5 of 1979 and 65 overall in my journey through films of my lifetime. Truly exploitive. There was a deep obsession with nudity as if this was somehow going to make this good. From the history of the producers I'd say they believe in the power of nudity to sell. It's too bad because the lesson that could have been taught by "Caligula" could have been a good one. It's one the producers could have learned actually. For example the movie "Auto Focus," the story of Bob Crane's personal pornographic life and his sex addiction. We see him increasingly unable to separate his sexual life from his public life. Lines of privacy and decency began to blur for him as his private life began to catch up in different ways within his family and career. The application to "Caligula" could have been similar but on an even greater scale. Unfortunately we just got nudity and gratuitous sex. It's always a shame to see good potential wasted but what's new. Wasted potential in the cast here. It was excellent and I'm surprised many of them chose to participate in this project. A compliment I'd like to pay is how the film abstracts Rome. It's almost like a play. Several scenes have a dreamy quality to them and this was a good solution to budgetary restraints not to mention that they were visually interesting. If one wanted to do this today one could use the style of "Sin City" and I believe it would translate nicely. I'm not certain they even meant for this to happen and it wouldn't surprise me if many just thought the film looked cheap, especially due to the costumes. Regardless of intent the net effect for me was that I found it to be more visually interesting. The second biggest crime is the boredom and pointless nature of the film. I suppose one could take away the theme of "absolute power corrupts absolutely" but that's hardly interesting as we have many contemporary examples. I had this VHS tape years ago and wanted to get the same version on DVD. Many have said here that this is the cut version, and the graphic scenes have been edited out.. That is false. This copy is the full un-cut and unrated version. Very graphic. Classic film version. Hail Caligula !
Showed up quick, sealed packaging. Was def a much weirder film that I remembered, and the visual formatting was def different. But, as weird rides go, still packs a good amount of "wtf???" Lol
Goes to show you can find anything on Amazon. Got it for a collector friend, that said it was Not being made anymore. My first thought? AMAZON! And wa-la.

A classic cult movie - not for children
Malcolm McDowell acting is superb as if the role was cut out for him. This movie takes you right into the heart of decadent Rome and the folly of Caligula. Not for the fait hearted and should be kept out of the reach of children due to violence and sexuality. A young Helen Mirren is also part of the cast and looks fabulous.

all the majors scene have been cut-off completely, they try to make a PG-14 out of 18+ poor quality image, it 's in the garbage now,....

It stars Malcolm McDowell, Teresa Ann Savoy, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole, John Steiner and John Gielgud. It is the only feature film produced by the men's magazine Penthouse. Producer Bob Guccione, the magazine's founder, intended to produce an explicit pornographic film with a feature film narrative and high production values. He also cast Penthouse Pets as extras in unsimulated sex scenes filmed during post-production by himself and Giancarlo Lui.
