The Avengers is a British television series created in the 1960s. It initially focused on Dr. David Keel and his assistant John Steed. Hendry left after the first series and Steed became the main character, partnered with a succession of assistants. His most famous assistants were intelligent, stylish and assertive women: Cathy Gale, Emma Peel and Tara King. Later episodes increasingly incorporated elements of science fiction and fantasy, parody and British eccentricity.

**This review does not spoil the movie or tell you anything you wouldn't know by watching the trailer.** In the first Avengers film, the gang must learn to work together in order to overcome a familiar foe and stop an alien invasion from destroying New York City and the world. The second film begins with our heroes tying up the last loose end from the so-called Battle of New York, which is to secure Loki's scepter so it's mystical energies can be harassed for mass destruction. In Age of Ultron, we finally meet Wanda and Pietro, which are the "captives" seen in the post-credit sequence after Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Winter Soldier showed us that Hydra had been running SHIELD almost since it was the Selective Scientific Reserve and Baron von Strucker is one of Hydra's "top thugs." Having volunteered for Strucker's experiments on human subjects using Loki's scepter as a catalyst, Pietro has superhuman metabolism that allows him to run at speeds that render him a mere blur to the human eye while Wanda is granted the powers of telekinesis as well as mind control and presumably others that are pseudo-mystical in nature. In Age of Ultron, we see that Wanda and Pietro Maximoff (referred to by most others as "the twins") are being groomed to be big-hitters for Hydra. The Avengers have their first encounter with the twins and, though most come out relatively unharmed, consider the Maximoffs to be a major potential that. Having retrieved Loki's scepter and returned to Stark/Avengers Tower in NYC, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner decide to experiment in the jewel in the scepter before Thor returns to Asgard with the jewel in tow. On analysis, they realize that the jewel isn't a mere energy source like was previously thought, but that the jewel houses some sort of mystical artificial intelligence. This prompts them to discuss the Ultron initiative, which is their theoretical project that would put artificial intelligence into an army of Tony's suits so that the Avengers could essentially retire. However, with Jarvis being the most advanced AI available the concept had insofar been only theoretical or hypothetical. Tony convinces Bruce that this "vulnerable blue planet" is in dire need of Ultron, so the two begin trying to adapt the AI in the jewel into something that could run the "Iron Legion." Unsuccessful, they retire to a party the Avengers are hosting to celebrate the end of the search for Loki's scepter and the end of the threat of another alien invasion, at least in the way it had occurred previously. Meanwhile, as Jarvis runs simulations trying to figure out how to adapt the AI in the jewel into the Ultron program, suddenly the AI in the jewel invades Starks computer systems, destroys Jarvis, and attacks the Avengers before making off work the scepter. Arriving on the other side of the world, Ultron begins creating an army of his own with the goal being to rod the world of the Avengers and force humanity to "evolve." One of the things that I really liked about Marvel's The Avengers: Age of Ultron was that the major threat Ultron owed it's existence to the recklessness of an actual Avenger rather than being some third party with a grudge who decides to destroy the world. Instead, Tony Stark's brainchild, which was intended to be the final solution for world peace and safety, became the near-cause of humanity's destruction. Another thing I really liked about Age of Ultron was that it really highlighted the differences in the perspectives of Tony Stark and the other members of the team, especially Captain America, which most will know is central to the plot of the third Captain America film, subtitled Civil War. Tony Stark has always been a self-serving, egotistical and reckless genius who, over the course of the MCU to date, has taken baby-steps toward being somewhat more heroic. However, despite his growing concern for the safety of others he remains unable to assess certain situations objectively. In Age of Ultron, he foresaw that the other Avengers would be against trying to put the jewel's AI into suits of armor, but his pride resulting in his belittling that perspective and in not lending it any credence. As a result, he impulsively played with forces that he knowingly couldn't completely control and almost caused the destruction of the Avengers and the world. I also really loved some of the characters introduced in this film. More specifically, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff (Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) as well as the Vision. In the case of the latter, Stark took the android body Ultron had intended for himself and instead put an "improved" version of Ultron's base AI into the suit after hybridizing it with Jarvis. The result was a new character that recognized that the situation isn't black and white, one side against the other; instead, the Vision is on the side of life and peace with his stance landing on the side that fights to protect those two things. Vision regrets having to kill Ultron because of Ultron's uniqueness, but resigns to Ultron's destruction since Ultron wants to destroy humanity. Unfortunately, Age of Ultron was slightly less well-received than the first Avengers film, which many still hail as one of the best superhero films ever made. In some ways, I can agree that the first film was better. However, I slightly prefer Age of Ultron to the first film since this one is a very organic and logical continuation of these characters' stories. Ultron was a very rich character who, despite being genocidal, still came off as having reached his destructive conclusions through logic, which is more effective than simply making a villain bloodthirsty for the sake of being bloodthirsty. Moreover, the characters introduced in this film--Scarlet Witch, the Vision, and Quicksilver particularly--could very well have major implications and play a huge part in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's almost a shame that Joss Whedon won't being making the two-part finale to the Avengers trilogy because he has really demonstrated a rich understanding of these characters, making them both heroic while also flawed, which is essential for realistic, dynamic characters.

Age of Ultron is about unintended consequences. When powerful people like the Avengers take action there is no way they can tell how they will affect others and the world. There are two such examples in the movie. First, the Maximoff twins of Pietro played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Wanda played by Elizabeth Olsen lost their parents to a Stark munitions in Sokovia which left with them extremely bitter and angry, and was why they were working with Hydra. Second, Tony Stark played by Robert Downjey Jr was still traumatized by his near death experience saving New York City from Loki and the Chitauri with a little boost from Wanda Maximoff. He convinces Bruce Banner played by Mark Ruffalo to help him create an artificial intelligence defense system for the world. That backfires however when it gains its own consciousness and becomes Ultron the antagonist in the film. The fact that both of these events were linked to Tony Stark showed that his ego could lead to as much bad as good. Like the best of the Marvel movies there are great action scenes. My favorite is when Wanda drives Banner crazy and Stark has to bring in a super suit to try to subdue the Hulk in Kenya. As usual there are a ton of Marvel Easter Eggs in the film. For example, Ultron goes to Ulysses Klaue played by Andy Serkis to buy vibranium which he stole from Wakanda. This was the first hint of the Black Panther. Ultron also cuts off Klaue’s arm which in the comics becomes his sonic cannon. In the Black Panther movie it’s replaced by a Wakandan ray gun. The film was also setting up the Infinity Wars films with Loki’s scepter having one Infinity Stone which was placed inside the Vision. Then Thor goes to a magical pool and sees all the Infinity Stones. At the end, Thor warns that someone was manipulating events with the Infinity Stones. That was Thanos. At a party at the start of the film the Avengers each try to pick up Thor’s hammer. Captain America played by Chris Evans is the only one that can make the hammer shift. That actually plays out in Avengers End Game. Wanda also gives each member of the Avengers a nightmare. For Thor he’s warned that his power will lead to the destruction of Asgard. That’s foreshadowing Thor: Ragnarok. For the first time the name Hawkeye is used when the Avengers hide out at Barton’s home and his wife calls him that. The Black Widow also calls Iron Man Shellhead which was how he was referred to in the Avengers’ comics. Don't forget the secret endings as usual. Overall, one of the best Marvel releases. C

I liked comic books as a kid, though in those days I was more a DC fan than a Marvel groupie. The reason was simple: DC comic book heroes were pretty straightforward characters. They may have had some issues (Batman's origin story left him flawed in many ways) but they generally did not have any doubts about who they were and what they were about. Marvel heroes, on the other hand, seemed to be so much more angst ridden and their lives overly complicated. Puberty was hard enough, I just didn't think I needed to stagger home from another day of school and then read about how difficult life is even if you have superpowers. Fifty years later I get it: Life is difficult. It is full of angst, drama, divorce, disappointment, war, disease and, as a result, I've become a Marvel movie fan. Given that different - and hard won - perspective, I enjoyed "Age of Ultron" on many levels. For example: I liked the overall premise, that brilliant people often create technologies that outstrip our ability to control them. The men who developed the internal combustion engine and then put it on wheeled vehicles probably did not realize that their inventions would one day foul the air to the point that planetary extinction is a possibility. They likely did not think that those engines, once refined, could be used to power fearsome war machines; tanks and mobile artillery pieces that would wreak havoc across much of Europe and Asia throughout the 20th Century. Another example: There are many of us - including Stephen Hawking - who worry about the threats posed by Artificial Intelligence for the same reason. Hawking famously noted some years ago that, in the beginning, the question will be "who controls AI" but in the end that will change to "can AI be controlled?" The jury is still out on that one. I also liked the fact that this movie humanized some of the characters: Hawkeye has a family, for example; Black Widow is crushing on Bruce Banner; and Tony Stark will go to almost any length to "make things right" as a result of his guilt for once being a developer of hugely powerful weapons. This movie has been reviewed - literally - thousands of times so I won't spend a lot of time rehashing its pros and cons. Instead, I'll simply say that I enjoyed it as both a visual treat and as a movie that raised some interesting ethical and moral questions for its audience to consider. Can't ask for much more than that.

Another notch for Marvel Cinematic Universe Success. Avengers Age of Ultron continues to spread forth an amazing collection of actors together in a phenomenal sequel to the Avengers. Joss Whedon does a marvelous job not just once but twice. After the Captain America 2 Winter Soldier and Agents of SHIELD Season 1 in which the offshoot Nazi Terrorist group HYDRA is still in existence, promoting terrorism into the 21st century and using SHIELD and the governments of the world to in order to rule the world. Avengers 2 Age of Ultron brings the Avengers to destroy HYDRA, but they are manipulated into creating a peace keeping initiative that blows up in their faces. Ultron, the artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark to prevent alien threats like Avengers or world threats like Captain America 2 turns on them and intends to destroy. This is more than just an action movie for the sake of action, but brings to mind the importance of fighting the good fight and the limits of power. Its nice to know more things about the Avengers as they develop in the face of their new enemies and their own demons. Its nice to know that a few years living in the 21st century that Steve Rogers still misses his dreams of a normal life, or how Natasha Romanov was trained as an assassin and robbed of a life she still wants, don't get me started on Clint Barton and of course Tony Stark's ambitions. They are friends but they have a chance to be a family and more as they fight to save the world. All this and more is just amazing. Nice to welcome back the old but also some new faces. As well as see plenty of great action. Some people complain about some stuff. The movie isn't as fresh as there is a feeling of 'sequelitis' as there is feeling to make the movie relevant. I won't go into specifics but I do believe its a little exaggerated. Joss Whedon also has said that he wanted to do more, bring more heroes and continue to develop things well into the next couple of films. Both of course didn't happen. Still this movie is really good and well worthy of a Blu-ray and Digital Copy.

Am I the only one who thinks this is just a very expensive prequel to Captain America:Civil War? Anyway, I greatly enjoyed the origin of the Vision and the voice of Ultron. I still think it's a shame that Hank Pym was not involved in Ultron's creation, but I've got to admit that Stark's obsession with technology would be a likely source of Ultron's genesis. I had the sense of rushed plotting in some ways. Baron strucker leaves the Marvel franchise ignominously and too quickly. The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are not well-developed enough int he final cut (although the Blu-ray EXTRAS help with this). Captain America, Iron Man and Thor are too well known as "commodities" to be consistently interesting here. They don't really grow or develop -- nor do they need to. They simply are who they are. I would have preferred the Avengers reckon with how Phil Coulson survived (in TV's Agents of SHIELD) than to see Nick Fury reappear. There is also a bit of a deus ex machina feel every time Fury's involved in the plot. I find that ironic because int he las movie he seemed to take a certain amount of pride that he wasn't a god (deus) like Loki. Times change a man, I guess? But Hawkeye, Bruce Banner, and the Black Widow come into much sharper focus here. This was very welcoeme. There finally seemed to be a reason for Hawkeye to be one the Avengers. And his interactions with the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were particularly effective. Stan Lee's cameo was genius. Falcon and War Machine put in fine guest appearances. Someone needs to give Anthony Mackie (Falcon) his own movie. The true highlight of the film for me, though, was the origin of the Vision. In case there are people who have not seen the film at all, I won't dwell on why each moment the Vision was ont he screen was so well done. But let's just say this -- Paul Bettany was perfect. I look forward to his next appearance. In the EXTRAS, take a look at Thor's cut scenes. I understand why some people would have been confused, but I would have preferred them to be in the film. IT sure made Thor's sudden RE-appearance in the film make more sense.
