Shy college student and otaku Miyako lives at home. One spring day, her little sister, Hinata, brings home a new friend she made at elementary school. From the moment Miyako sees Hana-chan, her heart won't stop racing. Desperate to make friends with the angelic Hana-chan, Miyako uses her skill at making sweets to try to lure her in, but.

Following Hana-chan, the new friend Hinata brings home this time is none other than the girl who moved in next door, Noa-chan. Miyako can't hide her distress at having the girl who witnessed her embarrassing display reappear before her eyes. Now, in order for Noa-chan to keep her secret, Miyako must do whatever she says.

At school, Hinata and the others are told to make an original board game for class, and the theme they choose is nothing other than "Mya-nee". Miyako can't hide her anxiety when confronted with a board game designed to help her be less shy, but then she realizes it's a chance to get closer to Hana-chan. She gladly joins in, and what awaits her is.

While playing in the pool Miyako readied for them in the backyard, Hinata, Hana-chan, and Noa-chan discover the unexpected truth that Miyako doesn't like school swimsuits. Sensing that now, while Hana-chan is wearing a school swimsuit, is her chance to grab the title of "most cute," Noa-chan presses Miyako hard, but..

One day, in spite of the fact that her little sister Hinata has been sent off on an errand, Miyako spends her time wearing her same old track suit, engrossed in a game. Her mother, Chizuru, can't stand seeing her daughter like this and gives Miyako money to go out and buy new clothes, but.

Noa-chan appears at the Hoshino house with special movie tickets she got from her mom. But they're only good until the next day - Miyako and Hana-chan have other plans, so they turn her down right away. Hinata is the only one who says she can go. Finding herself unexpectedly alone on a date with Hinata, Noa-chan decides to.

Noa-chan's upset because she can't get her hair to do what she wants. Hana-chan sees her and offers to help. Hana-chan is pleased with the results, but her catastrophic level of clumsiness makes things even worse leading Noa-chan to seek Miyako's help.

Hinata's class is putting on a play for the school Culture Festival, and the one nominated by Hinata to play the lead, the one who won the lottery, beating all those who volunteered for the part, is none other than Hana-chan. Miyako, delirious with delight, decides to buy a video camera to capture such a precious appearance, but the girls have something to ask of her.

The story centers on Miyako Hoshino, a shy college student and otaku. Miyako's younger sister Hinata, who is a fifth grader, has a classmate and friend named Hana. When they meet, Miyako falls for Hana at first sight.
Alright....much like the anime adaptation of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, I did...somewhat like the anime adaptation of WATATEN! even though for the most part it was bland and a dime a dozen to anime series that boast a similar premise. So...I did the same for WATATEN. It honestly was terrible in every single way.
For one, the illusrations were a pain to look like. At least with the anime they made it to where the characters all seemed lively and vivid in how they were represented. One of the first things to take note of is head proportions. In some early illustrations of the manga, the heads looked freakishly huge with their eyes being as big as dinnerplates. It...really creates an uncanny feel to the art style that unnerves me. Take how Miyako is represented in the manga. She looks incredibly creepy and more upfront about being a pedophile, or at least having pedophilic leanings. While the illustrations get better as the manga continues onward, it suffers from being average.
The story, well, it's exactly the same. However, what makes the way the story is depicted here different from the anime is that it gets painfully boring. While it is an uneventful slice of life manga, there isn't much to keep one interested enough into learning what would happen next. It lacks energy in comparison to its anime adaptation.
Lastly the characters. I would at least give the anime some credit that they did make the characters slightly more interesting which is more than what I can say about the manga. Miyako is probably one of the worst characters in the manga. Her attraction towards Hana was already questionable in the manga, but here, it is more pronounced and genuinely disturbing. The illustrations of the manga don't do her any better. Ultimately what made the characters forgettable in the manga is the lack of energy. The anime adaptation does a good job with making the characters seem more realistic and two-dimensional. Here, they come off as not even bland. They transcend being bland and only exist at the bottom of the barrel.
