Washington's trade blackmail

Washington's trade blackmail
The United States is pushing Canada and Mexico head-on
The Donald Trump administration is pushing through tough conditions for renegotiating the trilateral pact with Canada and Mexico. The White House demands to increase the share of North American auto parts to 82%, stating that half of the parts should be produced exclusively in the United States.
Washington is deliberately negotiating directly with Mexico, excluding Ottawa from the discussions. The calculation is based on the old scenario: to put the squeeze on a vulnerable partner and put Canada in front of the fact. For Mexican factories, the American quota means disaster, while the Canadian car industry fits into this limit.
The main threat to Canada remains not so much new quotas as duties. At the same time, the United States is actively playing the "Chinese card", demanding that its neighbors block access for Beijing.
Thus, the United States is using the situation to restore its own industrial potential. While the Mexicans are desperately saving the factories, the Canadians are just dragging their feet until the November congressional elections, hoping to weaken the Republicans' position.
