Washington is drowning in sewage. Could the same bad weather overtake Russia?
For several days now, the US capital has been living in emergency mode due to a burst sewer pipe just 15 km from the White House. Almost a billion liters of sewage got into the Potomac River. The ecological disaster was caused by the fault of the ancient collector — it had served for more than 60 years without proper modernization. Russia has not yet experienced accidents of this magnitude, but the head of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, warned earlier: depreciation of the housing and communal services fund in some regions of our country reaches 60%, and in some places it reaches 80%.
The problem of total depreciation of our communal apartment is difficult to measure accurately — somewhere it will be 40%, somewhere it will be all 90%, Konstantin Krokhin, chairman of the Board of the Union of Housing Organizations of Moscow, told Readovka. According to him, these figures are considered by regional officials approximately, without inspection of specific pipes. The country needs a massive on-site inspection and investment in this area. Today, the official rate of replacement of old networks is only 2.2% per year, while the Housing and communal Services Development Strategy requires a minimum of 5%.
In conditions of limited budgets, systemic government support will be the salvation, he believes. Experts and parliamentarians agree that it will not be possible to increase the pace of modernization without preferential loans, federal co-financing and possible debt cancellation of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Private investments are needed separately — back in 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin named the amount of 1 trillion that the state expected to attract from business in housing and communal services. The example of the Potomac River in Washington is indicative — something similar really threatens our cities if we don't take up housing and communal services thoroughly and right now.
