The path Dr. Kendra Lowe has walked as a cadet at the Air Force Academy as an active duty service member, and now as a military spouse, has given her a front-row seat to many of the traumas, setbacks, successes, discriminations, and celebrations that military families experience. These experiences fueled ten years of research aimed at better understanding military spouse stress and how bad the stress really is, as well as the unique contributing factors of the military lifestyle. Most significant were the findings that 27 percent of military spouses report significantly high levels of stress, while 20 percent have a higher, clinically significant, level of stress. In other words, approximately one in four military spouses wake up every day under a heavy layer of stress that builds day by day, week by week, and year by year. Unfortunately, many military spouses perceive this stress as normal, unaware of how dangerously close they are to clinically significant levels of emotional, social, or physical distress.
Wake up, Kick Ass, Repeat was created to help alleviate these significant concerns. This comprehensive and invaluable tool will help you accept the unique nature of military life, anticipate and persevere in the face of social-emotional setbacks, practice effective coping strategies, and learn to thrive on to new possibilities. Dr. Kendra has expertly woven research, personal anecdotes, powerful stories from other military spouses, as well as practical principals of Rational Behavioral Therapy to help individuals work through stressful situations while maintaining better emotional control. This is a must-have book for military and first responder spouses, their family members, professionals working with military and first responder families, as well as anyone seeking to find a way to help themselves to better social and emotional health. Dr. Kendra also includes thoughtful questions and exercises that any individual or group can put to immediate use.

Wow! Where to begin? I had the privilege of watching Dr. Kendra Lowe deliver her research in person in 2018, so when I found out that she was writing this book, I HAD to have it!

“Wake Up Kick Ass Repeat” is not only filled with real life stories from military spouses, it has easy tools for self assessment, reflection, and practice. I already knew a lot of my own stressors, so I was eager to see how this book would address my nagging internal question of: “I know I’m stressed, but now what?”

This book provided more than just an answer! It showed me how to identify my own triggers, thought patterns, attitudes, and subsequent reactions. It provided tools and exercises to find, tackle, and reprogram deep rooted, irrational attributes, that were on autopilot in my brain due to years of unrecognized stress. Most importantly it provided validation that I am NOT alone, that I am NOT crazy, and that I am NOT weak! My coping mechanisms are merely stressed, and that is OK!

Dr. Kendra Lowe shows you in this book that despite setbacks and struggles, you can survive, thrive, and find happiness again!

Lowe doesn’t candy coat the life of the military spouse. She tells it like it is and that’s so refreshing! She gives voice to our unique stressors and provides tools for cycling through our struggles. She reminds us perseverance is a choice and breaks it down for us. I love her highlighting our need to reflect on our inner thought patterns, our capacity for learned resourcefulness and the value of military spouses as a collective resource. This is an excellent book to facilitate personal growth and facilitate a conversation among military spouses. Our fellow spouses are a resource for support and inspiration and I know I was inspired reading the stories in the book. I just can’t wait to read this again in a book group!!

Finally! Leave it to a fellow military spouse to bring doctoral research backed facts—actual credible attention to the fact that being a military spouse is stressful and, tragically, for 123 spouses the stress has cost them their lives. I’m not talking about another fluffy personality test, another person saying, “Be resilient!”. Dr. Kendra Lowe has compiled compelling, raw, and real stories from fellow military spouses and weaved in proven psychological tools to help us navigate this life with those we love, but can be so daggone hard. She validates for us all, “It’s not just me!”, and provides a resourceful tool for us to thrive on.

As I read through this book, I was struck by the universality of some of the experiences the author described. While there is no doubt that the experiences military wives face are different from those the rest of us face, stress is stress – and there are many tips in this book to help you address and overcome them. That said, obviously the book is especially recommended for military spouses.

Highly recommend.

“One hundred twenty-three. In seconds it’s really not that much. In days deployed, it bears a little more weight. In lives, that number just became more significant. On September 26, 2019 the Department of Defense released, for the first time ever, the number of military spouse suicides. In 2017, that number was 123. Each number represents one of our own. A military spouse who couldn’t find a way out. A life gone too soon. It’s very hard to talk about. However, we must talk about it because one of those spouses could have been the energetic friend you met for morning walks with your children strapped into your jogging strollers. It could have been the new spouse you met at a Friday squadron social who told you they were struggling to find a job in the area. It could have been the seasoned military spouse you have always looked up to that “has it all together.” Could it even have been you?” Dr. Kendra Lowe, Wake Up, Kick Ass, Repeat.
This is a must-have book for military spouses, their family members, and helping professionals working with military families as well as anyone seeking to find a way to help themselves to better social and emotional health. The practical principals of rational behavioral therapy will prepare you to work through stressful situations while maintaining better emotional control. Dr. Kendra also includes thoughtful questions and exercises that any individual or group can put to immediate use.
We cannot accept another year with the loss of 123 military spouses. Pick up this resource now, start this eight week study individually or with a group of peers, and help yourself to better social and emotional health.
“I think that we, as military spouses, are unaware that we often operate at an elevated level of stress. A fact we sometimes forget. I sometimes visualize stress in my own life like I am spinning plates; I can keep them going until you add another plate and then it all falls apart. Military spouses operate at that level much of the time.” —Beth Autrey, Air Force Spouse
“I don’t think we know what we are capable of until we are pushed a little out of our comfort zone. But when it’s too much, we need to give ourselves the grace and seek help in whatever form that needs to be.” —Diane Teschner, Air Force Spouse
“While a person cannot change the events or the tragedies, they can choose the way forward…to thrive versus survive by looking for what opportunities, meaning, or change the event and loss has brought. It is in that choice that a person becomes a better person than the person before.”—Linda Ambard, Gold Star Spouse
