WWDC 2019 news: iOS 13, MacOS 10.5 and more

he Cupertino-based tech giant often uses the summer event to showcase the latest software upgrades for its iPhones, iPads and Mac computers, and occasionally unveils a new piece of hardware, too. 

But don’t expect Apple to reveal the new iPhone at the conference: the company traditionally launches its new smartphones in September, so there’s still a few months to go until the rumoured iPhone 11 breaks cover. Here’s what to expect: iOS 13

The announcement set to steal headlines at WWDC is the launch of iOS 13, the latest mobile software heading to Apple’s iPhone and iPad range. 

While last year’s iOS 12 update mainly focused on reliability and the performance of older phones, this year’s release is expected to introduce a host of new features and a possible design tweak. 

Tech news site Axios reported in January 2018 that a refresh of the software’s user interface was on the cards for iOS 12, but Apple then pushed backed the upgrade to iOS 13 so that the development team could focus instead on performance and stability.

The delayed visual update is also expected to be carried over to Apple’s CarPlay vehicle system.

Dark Mode, which debuted on macOS last year, will be making its way on to iPhones in iOS 13 as well, according to 9to5Mac. The mode swaps the lightly coloured menu bars for a dark grey tone, making it easier to view the phone’s screen at night. 

There will also be a host of usability improvements. TechRadar reports that the “extremely basic” camera app will get a much-needed makeover in the new update, with the addition of more “advanced tools” to keep up with those on rival devices such as the Huawei P30 Pro. 

Some of the new features will be exclusive to iPad users, including the addition of computer-like tabs in certain apps and a revamped file storage system, according to Trusted Reviews.

macOS 10.5

There aren’t nearly as many details being shared about Apple’s computer software, suggesting that macOS won’t look dramatically different to last year’s release. 

Among the rumoured updates is a new “universal apps feature”, which allows developers to design apps for iOS devices and carry them over to macOS with ease, says MacRumors. The move is expected to “significantly increase the number of apps available on Macs”.

Mac users will also be able to access new Music, Podcasts, and Books apps through macOS 10.5, the rumour site says. These will join a dedicated app for the first all-new TV subscription service, which is expected to arrive in the US this autumn. 

tvOS 13 and watchOS 6 updates

Along with its launch on macOS 10.5, the company’s TV subscription service will be coming to Apple TV in the new tvOS 13 update. 

The new software should also bring Apple Arcade, the tech giant’s video game subscription service, which is due to launch at the time as the new TV plan, TechRadar reports. 

In addition, WWDC is expected to feature an update for watchOS, which powers the Apple Watch.
