WVU Basketball Triumphs Over No. 5 Kansas

Headline: WVU Basketball Stuns No. 5 Kansas in Thrilling Overtime Victory

Morgantown, WV – In a game that will be remembered as one of the most electrifying in recent memory, the West Virginia University Mountaineers pulled off a stunning upset against the No. 5 ranked Kansas Jayhawks, winning 89-85 in overtime at a raucous WVU Coliseum on Saturday night.

The Mountaineers, led by senior guard Kedrian Johnson’s career-high 28 points, fought tooth and nail against the perennial Big 12 powerhouse. Johnson’s clutch performance included a game-tying three-pointer with just 12 seconds left in regulation, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and forcing overtime.

WVU’s defense, which has been a point of emphasis for head coach Bob Huggins all season, came up huge in the extra period. The Mountaineers held Kansas to just 2-of-10 shooting in overtime, while forward Tre Mitchell dominated the paint with 18 points and 12 rebounds, including a crucial put-back dunk that sealed the victory with under a minute to play.

'This is what we’ve been working for,' said Huggins in his post-game press conference. 'Our guys showed heart, toughness, and belief. Kansas is a great team, but tonight, our guys were just a little bit better.'

Kansas, led by All-American candidate Jalen Wilson’s 24 points, struggled to find their rhythm late in the game. The Jayhawks had multiple opportunities to close out the game in regulation but were unable to capitalize on key free throws and turnovers.

The win marks a significant turning point for WVU, who entered the game with a 12-7 record and were looking to solidify their NCAA Tournament resume. The victory over Kansas, a team that has dominated the Big 12 for years, sends a clear message that the Mountaineers are a force to be reckoned with as March Madness approaches.
