WHY KORFBALL IS A POPULAR SPORT?

Korfball is the only mixed-gender team sport in the world. Teams in korfball have been evenly split between male and female players from the sport's inception. The Dutch sport of korfball has roots in both basketball and netball. The game was created by Dutch teacher Nico Broekhuysen in 1902, which is when the sport first became popular. He chose to create his own version of the game and offer it to the Netherlands after taking inspiration from a Swedish game. As it gained popularity, it was even included as a demonstration sport at the Olympic Games in 1920 and 1928, but unfortunately it never succeeded in becoming a regular Olympic sport.

Every two goals, a team of four guys and four ladies switches between offense and defense. A center line divides the court into two sections, while a "Korf" post is positioned approximately 6.6 meters from the back line. There are two males and two females in each section, however you shouldn't mark a person of the other sex. To pass the ball through the yellow Korf, which is located 3.5 meters above the ground, is the object of the game.

The attacking side seeks to create shooting opportunities without the defending team marking or "defending" them through coordination and strategy. Despite being a mixed sport, only men can defend men, while only women can defend women in korfball.

The attackers' goal is to separate themselves from their defender so they have enough room to put the ball through their korf. As long as they are undefended, an attacking player may shoot from wherever in their own half. Whether they are scored at the goal line or one meter away, all goals are worth one point. The first team to score 16 goals wins the game.
