The national patenting procedure for UTLS in Saudi Arabia

W.E.T.E.R. & GOROD L.E.S.

As part of the patenting of the technical solution "Urban Transport and Logistic System" (UTLS) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the patent attorney, the right holder Tiaglin D.V. has received notice from the Saudi Arabian Intellectual Property Office (SAIP) dated August 9, 2022, of a substantive examination of the invention application, filed February 28, 2019.

Substantive examination was carried out after successful completion of formal examination, publication of information on the application in the official patent gazette and payment of the examination fee. The results of the examination are considered positive. Given the practice of patenting in other countries and the properties of the technical solution, there is a high probability of obtaining a patent for UTLS in Saudi Arabia, which will create prerequisites for the development and creation of similar communication systems, multi-level infrastructure facilities of the city.

Nowadays, the Middle East is becoming more and more attractive for economic activity and the implementation of innovative solutions, as it is rapidly developing and becoming in demand.

There are 46 Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs) in Saudi Arabia that work with SAIP to raise intellectual property (IP) awareness and help inventors realize their innovation potential and create, protect and manage IP rights. The continued work and efforts of these TISCs are leading to an increase in the number of invention applications filed in Saudi Arabia.

In addition, leading companies and major institutions in Saudi Arabia are investing in research and technological development (R&D), and the Kingdom ranks 26th out of 156 countries in R&D in the UN Conference on Trade and Development's "ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY READINESS INDEX".

An example of a leading research organization is Saudi Aramco, which operates a global network of 12 oil and gas research centers. Aramco has also launched its innovative LAB7 project, which plans to translate new breakthrough ideas into real projects.

The Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has established five research and innovation centers with state-of-the-art equipment in the Middle East and North Africa, the United States, Europe, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia.

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) operates 12 research centers to meet its strategic objectives. KAUST has achieved outstanding results: through a huge number of patents, the university has created 35 companies owned by its professors and students, through which it contributes to the ecosystem of Saudi Arabia's knowledge base.

King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) has established the DTVC Dhahran Techno Valley Company in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia, which plays a key role in creating a knowledge-based ecosystem.

In light of all these processes taking place in Saudi Arabia and in the region, SAIP is certainly making positive use of Saudi Arabia's strategic position and influence in the region to promote innovative solutions and products in order to develop the economy and achieve a positive social impact.
