Lost in all the midterm post-mortems and crypto implosion schadenfreude is a historic vote that took place in the newly lame duck Senate. This week the Senate voted to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that goes a long way toward codifying same-sex marriage on a federal level, effectively telling the various Heritage Foundation flunkies on the Roberts court to keep their grubby mitts off. Cool, now do abortion rights.
The Dobbs decision, a poorly reasoned, mean-spirited opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito with all the charm of canker sore, finally motivated Dems and the few Republicans yet to renounce their humanity to codify same-sex marriage into law. The act stops short of forcing individual states to issue same-sex marriage licenses but it does require all states to recognize same-sex marriages from all states where its legal. It also recognizes the marriages on a federal level for the purposes of programs like social security and medicare.
Post midterm Dems wasted no time in bringing the bill to a vote. No time like the present especially when Clarence Thomas drew a bright red target around Obergefell v. Hodges, the case that cleared the way for same-sex marriage, in his concurring opinion on Dobbs. The court has been telling us who they are and the Democratic leadership finally decided to believe them. This vote moves the bill to the floor for a final vote after which it can be sent to the house, which passed a version this summer, to be amended.

Four Kansas men , including a former detective, were indicted by a federal grand jury on Monday for conspiring to hold young women involuntarily for sexual acts, decades ago.
The Topeka, Kansas grand jury charged former Kansas City Police Department Detective Roger Golubski, Cecil Brooks, LeMark Roberson and Richard Robinson in the indictment, for crimes that took place between 1996 and 1998.

According to the indictment, Brooks provided an apartment in Kansas City, where he, Roberson and Robinson threatened, beat, and sexually assaulted young women to "compel" them to provide sexual services to men.
Golubski, a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice read, allegedly accepted money from Brooks. In exchange, Golubski provided protection from law enforcement for activities, including sex trafficking. The former detective also allegedly raped a young women identified as Person 2.
All four men were indicted on the first count of conspiring to hold young women, including Person 1 and Person 2, involuntarily for servitude.

Brooks, Roberson, and Robinson were charged with the second count of holding Person 1 and forcing her to give Roberson sexual services.
The third count is against Brooks, Roberson and Golubski, who allegedly held Person 2 against her will and forced her to give sexual services to the three men and others.
All four men, if convicted, face a maximum sentence of life in prison, the DOJ said.
Members of the FBI Kansas City Field Office were credited with investigating the case alongside the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Stephen Hunting, an assistant U.S. attorney in Kansas and Tara Allison, an attorney with the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division will prosecute the case.
The DOJ said the investigation is ongoing, and they encourage anyone with information regarding the case to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
