A head-to-toe knitwear brand with modern-day appeal, White + Warren blends classic and contemporary sensibilities through extraordinary craftsmanship.
This May at White + Warren we have been celebrating Moms That Inspire! So, what better way to end the month than to sit down with two new moms who inspire us daily? Emily Overbay, is the Manager of Research for our Design and Development team. She is a first-time mom to her son Griff, 9 months. Diana Jankovsky is the Key Account Executive on our Sales Team. She welcomed baby Edward into the world just 5 months ago! These White + Warren moms talked to us about pregnancy style, their first Mother’s Day and their favorite spots for babies (and moms) in NYC!

Pregnancy can prove to be quite the style challenge. How did pregnancy change your style and what were your wardrobe staples?
Diana: Pregnancy made me realize something about my daily wardrobe – I normally wear a lot of oversized clothing! I was able to transition a good amount of my wardrobe with a few adjustments here and there. And of course, maternity jeans. I’m so lucky to work at White + Warren where a cashmere cardigan or oversized v neck is the perfect thing to wear to work. The biggest change in my style was giving up heels… I would have loved to be that pregnant person who effortlessly floats about in stilettos throughout, but I definitely was not. My two top wardrobe staples included a long tank top for layering under everything, and a Travel Wrap. Even in the most casual outfit I always felt more pulled together in a travel wrap. Plus, it helped conceal in those early days.
Early motherhood is filled with hectic schedules, long days and sleepless nights. What do you do to set aside that special “me time?”
Emily: Ha! I don’t even remember what “me time” is anymore. Seriously though, around the 3 month mark I would try to dash out to a yoga class whenever possible. It made me feel human again. Also, once our bundle of joy shifted to an earlier bedtime (around 7pm) my husband and I reclaimed our evenings. We have dinner together, watch our shows, read or just talk. This was a big turning point for everyone.
We are so excited to have you back in the office! What do you do when you find yourself missing your little guy during the work day?
Diana: I try very very hard not to constantly check in. My babysitter sends me pictures and updates throughout the day, and I just try to think of that happy little face when I get home. I fly off of the subway to see him now.
What has motherhood taught you about yourself?
Emily: To have perspective on what is really important. Not to get caught up in the little insignificant stresses of daily life. And, that I am capable of such an all-encompassing, selfless kind of love. It has me in awe every day.
Happy first Mother’s Day! How did you celebrate?
Diana: Because we were spending Sunday celebrating with family, my husband decided Saturday was my day. In the morning, Edward was holding a jewelry box when he and my husband came into the bedroom, Edward had “picked out” a beautiful Jennifer Meyer bracelet with a tiny letter E. We had brunch at Watty and Meg‘s in my neighborhood, and I ordered the most ridiculous and delicious BLT sandwich with a fried egg and avocado. It was a great day.
What are your favorite stores for baby toys and clothes?
Emily: Diapers.com is my new favorite website (same day delivery in NYC!) and I love Mini Boden for the cutest tees and casual bottoms. Bella Bliss has ridiculously adorable overalls and john-johns.
NYC can be a real adventure (and challenge!) for a West Coast woman like yourself. What are some of your favorite activities to do in the city with your baby, and what are you most looking forward to doing with him as he gets a little older?
Diana: I am really lucky to live in Brooklyn, where everything is so accessible on foot. On the weekends we love to walk around our neighborhood, have brunch, and even do a little bit of shopping. There is a place called 61 Local right around the corner from us and they have great food, drinks, and a very relaxed atmosphere. I love meeting friends of mine there because it’s noisy enough that they don’t mind baby sounds, and Edward really enjoys the people watching. I am excited to take him on more adventurous outings when he’s older. I know my husband is looking forward to his first Nets basketball game at the Barclays Center. And I can’t wait to take him to the Metropolitan Museum of Art so we can walk around and enjoy the art before he’s old enough to say no! He also loves all kinds of music so I would love to see the look on his face when we take him to his first concert in Central Park. Maybe next summer…
What is the best piece of wisdom/advice you received while pregnant that you want to share with other new or soon-to-be moms?
Emily: Have your mom (or someone close to you) come stay with you immediately after you give birth so she can take care of you and you can take care of your baby. My mom came to stay with us and she was a blessing. I will forever be grateful for her help those first few weeks.
What’s your favorite piece of White + Warren that fits into both of your lives - mom and baby?
Emily: The Travel Wrap. I am always wearing one and I’ve used it as a blanket for Griff on the plane, a picnic sheet in the park and a cover over his car seat to block out distractions so he would sleep. The Travel Jersey Drawstring Pant is ridiculously comfortable and perfect for a mom-on-the-go. The Cashmere Essential V Neck is my go-to sweater. I have it in 5 colors and I wore one almost every day in those first few months after giving birth. It’s relaxed and generous in all the right places, but it still feels put together and cool.
Be sure to check out our interviews with the amazing moms that inspire us: Soul Cycle guru Halle Becker. Blogger and Food Director of Real Simple Magazine, Sarah Copeland. Founder of Hatch, Ariane Goldman. And co-founder of Fresh Cosmetics, Alina Roytberg.
We’re looking forward to a summer of swimsuits, sunbathing and seasonal salads. So, who better as our first W+W Woman of the Summer than nutritionist and NYC food guru, Stephanie Middleberg? Stephanie is the owner or Middleberg Nutrition - a thoughtful and personal nutritionist in NYC. She chatted with us about her favorite eating spots in NYC and her guide to healthy and happy Summer. She even shared her current favorite recipe!
New York City is filled with temptation. What are some of your favorite spots to satisfy your palate while maintaining a healthy lifestyle?
Yes it is! I love going out to eat and try new restaurants. For lunch, I always end up on Kenmare Street at the Butcher’s Daughter. They have some of the best juices and smoothies in the city. When I walk in, it takes me right to Venice Beach. Another lunch/brunch favorite is Northern Spy Food Co. It’s the best kale salad in the city, hands down (trust me I’ve tried them all). For special occasions, I love ABC Kitchen. I have to give you my favorite sushi spot (even though I really don’t want to tell you). It’s the best sushi you’ve never heard of - Hibino in Cobble Hill. To satisfy my sweet tooth I typically turn to store bought chocolate (Mast Brothers is my favorite). When something from the pantry just won’t suffice, I head to Il Buco Alimentari for chocolate sorbet, I’ve never had anything like it. Or I love Victory Garden for the Chia Pudding-Parfait Bar - it’s so good.
The key to eating out and staying healthy is simple: don’t overeat and pick your vices carefully. If you know it’s going to be a heavy drinking evening, no bread basket, no dessert and go for veggies and fish. I have a sweet tooth and I will always save room for dessert. I usually order two appetizers to keep my portions in check.
Summer is finally here and we’re all pulling out our shorts and dresses. What seasonal summer foods do you recommend to keep us healthy and feeling good about ourselves?
The key to eating right and feeling good in your summer clothes is staying away from foods that add to the “puff factor” while choosing foods that de-bloat:
Asparagus: A potassium powerhouse (helps pump out excess sodium).
Artichokes: High in fiber and magnesium (good for bone health, headaches, GI, sleep), low in calories and a probiotic. Plus it’s a natural diuretic.
Cherries: Aid in reducing inflammation and are a great post workout recovery food. Some call it natural lunesta because it can be a good sleep aid. Stick to 15 per serving.
Berries: very versatile and high in antioxidants
Hydrate! If you can make only one change try drinking two litres of water a day (warm water with lemon at night or in morning is a great cleanser). For extra hydration I recommend coconut water (I’ll even mix it with some chia). My favorite brands are Harmless Harvest and Taste Nirvana.
You’re a contributing health advisor for a number of fashion magazines including Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour and WWD. Does fashion play an important role in your day-to-day? Who are your style icons?
The Taurus in me appreciates beauty whether it’s a silky delicious avocado or the softest cashmere top. Being my own boss affords me a lot of flexibility. I try to keep things fun and casual, both in my style and in my office decor. This ensures my clients can relax and feel comfortable. Comfort is very important to me because I am sitting down in a chair for most of the day.
My personal style revolves around classic pieces that have unique details and textures. I jazz them up with accessories that I discover at antique shows and vintage markets. I’m aware of the trends and am not afraid to experiment, but I know what works for me. I’ve come to observe that one’s style pretty accurately reflects their eating. Those who keep up with the fashion trends, they stopped eating kale months ago in favor of blue green algae and they’ll dump that as quickly as they mothballed their studded Manolos. Same goes for the opposite end of the spectrum. Clients with consistent style are also consistent in their eating habits.
As for style icons, I’m more influenced by what I see in everyday life than celebrities, models or designers. I’m lucky to live in Brooklyn, work on the Upper East Side and spend my free time downtown. Everyday I’m exposed to a confluence of different looks. Plus, my husband is quite the snappy dresser and sometimes he plays stylist (just don’t tell anyone!). I also count street style blogs as a big influence on my closet. I am a huge fan of Tomboy Style. I grew up playing sports and was daddy’s little girl so I easily relate to that aesthetic.
We are excited to announce the lovely Lilliana Vazquez as March’s White + Warren Woman. Lilliana is the founder of the blog The CheapChica’s Guide to Style as well as a style expert and TV personality seen on NBC, CBS, TBS and more. This October, she’ll be launching her new book The CheapChica’s Guide to Style: Secrets to Shopping Cheap and Looking Chic. She chatted with us about style icons, Spring trends and the secrets to her camera-ready look!
How did you get started in styling?
I started styling for television shows after the launch of my blog, The CheapChica’s Guide to Style in 2007. There weren’t a lot of stylists catering to women with real bodies and more importantly real budgets, so I made it my mission to give these women a place in the fashion world and show them that style is not only accessible but affordable.

This transitional time between Winter and Spring can be really tough to dress for. What are your staples for this time of year?
This time of year is all about smart layering with lightweight sweaters like your Cashmere Color Block V Neck and the right outerwear. My staples are blazers, leather Moto jackets and a classic Burberry trench - even if you’re just wearing flats and leggings, it makes you feel totally put together!

Who are your style icons?
Grace Kelly for day-time chic and Bianca Jagger for night-time glam.

We love reading your blog to get our fashion fix, we hear you also have a book coming out. What can you tell us about this exciting endeavor?
That The CheapChica’s Guide to Style: Secrets to Shopping Cheap and Looking Chic is unlike any other fashion book out there. For the first time there’s a book that blends shopping, styling and saving in a smart, thoughtful way. It’s been a labor of love but I can’t wait for it to come out in October!

We know you’ve covered lots of restaurants for NY Live, what are some of your favorite spots in NYC?
I’m mildly infatuated with fresh pasta, so I frequent Maialino way too often and I have a bit of a sweet tooth so any dessert at The General will do. Right now, I’m obsessed with their donuts. Trust me on this one, donuts are the new cupcake!

With a background in TV, you always look camera-ready. You must have lots of beauty secrets, can you share some?
I won’t go on-air without:
Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencil because it hides anything and everything— it also stays put under the hot lights!
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is hands down the best foundation on the market (and I’ve tried everything). The finish is flawless and lets skin look like skin!
Nars Pure Matte Lipstick delivers tons of color without extra shine. My favorite is Carthage (a bold pink) because it instantly wakes up your entire face!
Pssst Dry Shampoo because who has time for daily blowouts?!

What is your favorite piece of White + Warren?
I live in Philadelphia, but my work takes me to New York and LA so most of my days are spent on a train or a plane. Your Cashmere Travel Wrap is the perfect accessory if you’re traveling like me or just looking to add a little luxury to your everyday!
