Während der Feierlichkeiten wollte der König Joan zum ersten Mal belohnen. Für sich selbst wollte Jeanne nichts. Sie bat Karl, die Bauern ihres Heimatdorfes Domremy von Steuern zu befreien. Keiner der späteren Herrscher Frankreichs wagte es, den Bewohnern von Domremy dieses Privileg zu nehmen. Auch im 19. Jahrhundert, unter Kaiser Napoleon, zahlten sie keine Steuern an den Staat.

Obwohl die beiden Hauptziele von Jeanne – die Befreiung von Orleans und die Krönung von Charles – erreicht wurden, war die Maid of Orleans eifrig zu kämpfen. Immerhin hatten die Briten in weiten Teilen des Landes noch das Sagen. Jeanne versuchte, sie aus Paris, der Hauptstadt Frankreichs, zu vertreiben.

Aber der frischgebackene König verlor das Interesse an seinem Retter. Die von Karls Höflingen errichtete Mauer aus Gleichgültigkeit und Hass brachte das Mädchen zur Verzweiflung. Manchmal dachte Jeanne daran, ins Dorf zurückzukehren. Die Partisanenbewegung, die das Land unter dem Einfluss der Heldentaten der Maid of Orleans erfasste, erschreckte den Adel immer mehr. Die französischen Adligen beschlossen, Jeanne loszuwerden. Verräterische Verschwörungen begannen sich um das Mädchen zu weben.

Der König vereinbarte heimlich mit den Burgundern, dass Paris in ihrer Hand bleiben würde. Ohne sich dessen bewusst zu sein, ohne Truppen und Hilfe, versuchte Jeanne im September 1429 mit einer kleinen Abteilung, Paris einzunehmen. Das Mädchen wurde schwer verwundet. Lange Monate der Behandlung zogen sich hin. Unter dem Vorwand, sich um ihre Gesundheit zu kümmern, wurde Jeanne unter Hausarrest gestellt.

Als Jeanne im Mai 1430 erneut an den Feindseligkeiten teilnahm, war ihr Schicksal besiegelt. Mit einer winzigen Abteilung treuer Anhänger kam sie der von Feinden belagerten Festung Compiègne zu Hilfe. Einmal, nach einem erfolglosen Ausfall der Compiènes, kehrte Jeanne in die Festung zurück. Vom französischen Hof bestochen, hob der Kommandant von Compiègne die Festungsbrücke vor dem Mädchen auf und schloss die Tore.

Jeanne wurde von den Burgundern gefangen genommen und schmachtete sechs Monate lang im runden Turm des Schlosses Beaurevoire. Karl VII., für den Jeanne so viel getan hat, rührte keinen Finger für sie. Aber er konnte sie erlösen oder gegen eine edle Gefangene eintauschen. Die Burgunder verkauften Joan für eine riesige Summe, die dem Lösegeld des Königs entsprach, an die Engländer. Die Briten haben lange davon geträumt, die Maid of Orleans zu bekommen. Alle Fehler der Eindringlinge waren mit ihrem Namen verbunden. Jeanne hätte als Hexe und Teufelsbotin erkannt werden sollen. Unterdessen versuchte das Mädchen erfolglos, Selbstmord zu begehen.

Um Jeanne als Zauberin darzustellen, organisierten die Briten einen Prozess gegen die Jungfrau von Orleans. Sie wurde von den Theologen der Universität von Paris, Unterstützern der Briten, beurteilt. Bischof Cochon leitete das Gericht. Schlaue Theologen stellen Jeanne ihre Fallen, aber sie antwortete aufrichtig, mit gesundem Menschenverstand, der sie nie im Stich lässt. Nach sechs Monaten erschöpfender Verhöre beschuldigten korrupte Kirchenmänner das Mädchen der Häresie und Hexerei.

Im Mai 1431 wurde die neunzehnjährige Jeanne auf dem zentralen Platz der Stadt Rouen verbrannt. Die Brandstelle ist noch immer mit einem weißen Kreuz auf den Steinen des Platzes markiert. Das französische Volk vollendete die von Johanna begonnene Arbeit. Die Freiheitsbewegung wurde immer stärker. Der Hundertjährige Krieg endete mit der Vertreibung der Briten aus Frankreich.

Nach 25 Jahren beschloss Karl VU, die inzwischen verstorbene Jeanne für seine Zwecke zu nutzen. Auf seinen Befehl hin wurde das Gerichtsverfahren überprüft, Jeanne für unschuldig erklärt. Damit sprach Karl VII. von der Anklage im Zusammenhang mit der Hexe frei. Später, im Jahr 1920, wurde die Jungfrau von Orleans als Heilige heiliggesprochen.

Der Name Jeanne d'Arc ist für immer als Symbol der selbstlosen Liebe zu ihrem Heimatland und der Hingabe an ihr Volk in die Geschichte eingegangen.
