Milana Aleksandrovna Vayntrub ( / ˈ v aɪ n t r uː b / VYNE -troob , Russian : Милана Александровна Вайнтруб ; [3] born March 8, 1987) is an American actress, comedian, and activist. Born in the Soviet Union to Jewish parents, she began her career as a child actress shortly after immigrating to the United States. She came to prominence for her appearances in AT&T television commercials as saleswoman Lily Adams from 2013 to 2016 and since 2020. In addition to her commercial appearances, she was a series regular on the Yahoo! Screen science fiction comedy Other Space (2015) and had a recurring role on the NBC drama This Is Us (2016–2017). Vayntrub has also voiced Squirrel Girl in the Marvel Rising franchise since 2018 after being cast as the character in the unaired television pilot for New Warriors .

Vayntrub was born in Tashkent , Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic , USSR , [4] and is Jewish . At two years of age, she and her parents immigrated to the U.S. as refugees to escape antisemitism , [5] settling in West Hollywood . She started acting in Mattel Barbie commercials at the age of five, due in part to her family's financial problems. Vayntrub briefly attended Beverly Hills High School , but dropped out after her sophomore year, obtained a GED and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from University of California, San Diego . [6] She studied improv comedy with the Upright Citizens Brigade . [7] [8]

Vayntrub made her acting debut appearing in three episodes of the NBC television series ER in 1995. [9] She and Stevie Nelson teamed up to start the YouTube comedy channel Live Prude Girls where they produced a number of shorts. [7] Live Prude Girls went on to be featured on NewMediaRockstars ' Top 100 Channels countdown, ranked at number 93. [10] Vayntrub has had small roles in film and television, including Life Happens and Silicon Valley . [11] She has also starred in several CollegeHumor videos. [8]

From 2013 to 2016, Vayntrub portrayed a saleswoman named Lily Adams in a series of TV commercials for AT&T . [8] She returned to the role in 2020. [12] She also portrayed Tina Shukshin as a series regular on the Yahoo! Screen series Other Space , created by Paul Feig , in 2015. The following year, she appeared in Feig's Ghostbusters reboot alongside Other Space cast members Neil Casey , Eugene Cordero , Bess Rous , and Karan Soni . Between 2016 and 2017, she appeared in the television series This Is Us , playing Sloane Sandburg. [9] In July 2017, Vayntrub was cast in the lead role of Marvel Comics superheroine Squirrel Girl in the New Warriors television pilot for Freeform . [13] Freeform ultimately passed on the series that November, and despite attempts to move the series to another network, it was ultimately cancelled. [14] [15] Despite the series' cancellation, Vayntrub voiced Squirrel Girl in the Marvel Rising franchise. [16] She is set to reprise the role for a six-episode scripted podcast from Marvel and Sirius XM titled Marvel's Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show [17] [18] Also in 2017, Vayntrub starred in the Eko interactive streaming television series That Moment When as Jill. [19]

She starred in the film Mother's Little Helpers in 2019, which premiered at South by Southwest . [20] In April 2020, Comedy Central 's YouTube channel released three sketches starring Vayntrub and Akilah Hughes as part of a new digital sketch series called Making Fun With Akilah and Milana . [21] She starred in the Quibi streaming television series Die Hart and in the short film The Shabbos Goy as Hannah, both released in July 2020. [22] [23]

In January 2016, after visiting Greece and meeting with refugee families fleeing the Syrian Civil War , Vayntrub co-founded a website and social media movement called "Can't Do Nothing" to spotlight the European migrant crisis . [7]

Vayntrub is pro-choice ; she aborted a pregnancy as a college student out of financial concerns. [24]

The parents of a trainee teacher who killed himself because he had been bullied for years over his sexuality have published their son's suicide note in a local newspaper.
Tim Ribberink, who was training to become a history teacher, killed himself last Thursday following years of bullying.
But the decision by his parents Gerrit and Hetty Ribberink to publish their son's suicide note has divided opinion in the Netherlands.

In the newspaper, the suicide note is published along with Tim's death notice and a large smiling picture of him.
It reads: 'Dear Mum and Dad, All my life I have been ridiculed, abused, bullied and excluded. You guys are fantastic. I hope you’re not angry. Until we meet again, Tim.'
His devastated parents, from Tilligte, east of Amsterdam, said they were not aware that there son was struggling to cope until he killed himself last Thursday.
According to Irish Times.com, his parents have now asked police to investigate his death and in particular, to look at two fake messages which were posted in his name online.
One of the messages dates back to 2010 with the second appearing last summer. It read: 'I am a loser and a homo'.
The parents are now hoping the police will be able to identify the bullies by investigating the fake messages.

The decision by Tim's parents to publish the suicide note led to a massive reaction on Twitter.
Despite some negative comments, the majority of posts supported the parents' decision to publish the note. Many called for tougher laws to deal with bulling.
Within hours of the story about Tim's death emerging, his photograph was shared more than 5,000 times. The Twitter hashtag #timribberink has also been trending in the Netherlands.
Last night, an emotional funeral took place at the Catholic church in Tilligte.

Hundreds of friends and family attended, with many still shocked and angry about his death.
A message from his parents was read to the congratulation from local pastor Marinus Van den Berg, which read: 'Tim was not weak or pathetic. He was strong. That is how we knew him, and that is how he would want the world to remember him.'
They also quote Winston Churchill by telling other people who are being bullied to never give up.
Tim's teacher training college in Windesheim and his former secondary school both said they did not know Tim was being bullied.
