S ince your skin is your largest organ, it makes sense that a lot can go awry. Pimples, warts, ingrown hairs, rashes, and chafing— lions, tigers, bears, oh my! Especially when it comes to the potentially harder-to-discuss dermatological concerns of the vulva. The good news is that you've got a lot of tools at your disposal to prevent or treat pesky irritations like vaginal chafing. Alyssa Dweck, MD , gynecologist, and chief medical officer for Bonafide , specializes in all things vaginal health and chafing cases definitely appear in her office.

"During the last few years, because of the popularity of spin classes and stationary bikes , I've actually seen a lot more chafing of the vagina and vulva area," she says.
Chafing is caused by friction and moisture, either skin-to-skin or skin-to-another surface, says Dr. Dweck. This is why spin class is a major culprit of vaginal chafing, but Dr. Dweck reassures that it doesn't mean you should stop going.
Part of the problem with chafing is that there are varying moisture levels, which means that there's wetness or sweat that can dry into stickiness. Stickiness, either from sweat, discharge, or menstruation, can cause increased friction. The way to prevent all of these frustrating features of the laws of physics is moisturizing and lubrication.
This means adding balms between your thighs, so they don't chafe, and a vaginal-appropriate topical moisturizer or even lubrication before a high friction activity like walking or spinning, says Dr. Dweck. Additionally, staying hydrated throughout the day can prevent uneven perspiration, which can lead to that pesky stickiness.
When you start chafing, it will not usually solve itself on its own and will likely become painful. You know your body best, so there's a difference between a pesky underwear lining and full-on chafing. When full-on chafing is occurring, it's best to stop the friction, rinse the area with clean water, or cleanse with a clean damp washcloth. If the skin is brokern, talk to a care provider about topical creams that might help with wound care.
Anatomically speaking, the vagina is within the labia minora (inner lips), which are within the labia majora (outer lips). The most common areas that experience chafing, in Dr. Dweck's experience, are the inner thighs, between the thigh and labia majora, or between the labia majora and minora. The literal vagina is protected by these features of the vulva's anatomy, but it still can experience chafing . Penetrative sex with a hand, penis, or dildo can all rub against the sensitive skin in such a way that chafes and leaves it sore the next day. This is normal and not a cause for concern, but Dr. Dweck recommends you use more lube throughout your sexual activity to prevent this.
Chafing can be so frustrating and kind of hard to talk about. It totally happens to everyone, though, and there are a lot of tools for prevention at your disposal.

An uncomfortable experience for any women is vaginal chafing. Although chafing may appear on different parts of the body, for example, inner thighs, armpits, nipples but when vagina and vulva is affected, it is the most unpleasant experience.
Chafing is rubbing the skin against clothing or other irritable materials. The irritation caused due to this unwanted activity causes the skin to inflame, burn and sting. When the vagina is affected, it is known as vaginal chafing.
The most common cause of vaginal chaffing is wearing tight underclothes, rough sexual intercourse, intensive rubbing during masturbation and use of sanitary napkins. Sweating in excess worsens the symptoms and make your problem worse.
Other contributing factors for vaginal chafing are obesity, vaginal dryness after menopause, shaving, waxing, lack of hygiene and use of harsh vaginal cosmetics such as soaps or perfumes. Activities such as riding bike or exercise may also cause vaginal chafing.
The signs of vaginal chafing include irritation, pain, redness, itch, raised, cracked and peeling of skin.
There are creams available in the market to get rid of vaginal chafing. But as the vagina is a sensitive part of the female body we suggest you try home remedies for vaginal chafing as they are not only effective but also skin friendly and free from any side effects.
Aloe vera has medicinal properties. It has soothing and antimicrobial properties. Extract the gel of fresh aloe vera leaf and apply it to the affected area two times in a day for a few days.
Basil leaves and coconut oil is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and have healing properties. Crush a few basil leaves and add coconut oil to it. Mix both the ingredients and apply to your intimate area before sleeping. You may also add ghee or clarified butter instead of coconut oil as clarified butter also have healing properties and treats infection and irritation. Also, it makes skin soft and smooth.
Turmeric is antiseptic. It is a natural home remedy to treat some infections. Add water to turmeric powder to make a paste and apply it to the vaginal area. Repeat this two times in a day.
Honey has soothing, antibacterial and humectant properties. It prevents infection and treats dryness. It relieves irritation and makes the skin soft. Also honey has anti-allergic and rich in healing properties. Apply honey directly to the intimate area before sleeping and in the morning wash it off with warm water and then dry.
Oatmeal relieves the itch. You can make a homemade ointment with oatmeal and olive oil to treat vaginal chafing. Mix both the ingredients and apply the paste to the affected area. Leave it for half an hour, wash it and dry the intimate area. Repeat this two times in a day.
Tea tree oil is the most potent home remedy for chafing. It is a natural antibacterial and antifungal. The oil is so potent that you should not apply it directly to the skin or it may cause irritation. Add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil to a teaspoon of coconut oil. Mix well and apply it to the affected area once or twice in a few days.
Beside the home remedies also try some ways to prevent vaginal chafing. Wear loose cotton under clothes for proper air circulation. Apply talcum powder to the affected area. Use a water-based lubricant while having sex or masturbating. Use cotton pads. Maintain hygiene, avoid using harsh vaginal cosmetics. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. Before shaving vaginal area soften the hair by using lubricant. Better shave after a shower to open hair follicles.

Home Intimate Health Feminine Hygiene Suffering at the hands of chafing down there? Here are 5 tips that can help
Chafing happens to almost everyone, and while there’s nothing to worry about, it doesn’t mean you have to sit back and endure the pain! It can happen anywhere where there’s skin-to-skin contact, but one of the most common areas is the vaginal area.
The major cause of chafing is the combination of sweat and friction, and if you’re someone who is physically active, we’re sure you’ll have to deal with this uncomfortable situation from time to time. Chafing can range from mild to extreme with just redness and irritated skin, to bacterial or yeast infection, so it’s important to keep a check on it from the very beginning!
And even if you are not that physically active, certain things like the fabric of any cloth can cause chafing. You never know when these tips come handy, so keep reading!
As mentioned above, the biggest cause of chafing is the combination of moisture and friction. So, here’s how you can avoid it:
1. Keep yourself clean Start with the easiest thing, and that means you must take a proper bath every day. Daily activity leads to the build-up of dirt, and sweat in your thigh area, which is called thigh grime. This causes chafing, so bathing after a vigorous physical activity is always important!
If for some reason, you aren’t able to bathe, try to clean the sweat and dirt with the help of a clean cloth or wipe.
2. Use a powder We all know powders are great when it comes to absorbing moisture. If you have a baby powder lying around, you can use it to apply around your groin area to prevent any build up of moisture. But make sure you aren’t using cosmetic powder or any other powder that is heavily perfumed.
3. Apply an anti-chafing cream Anti-chafing creams are a type of lubricants that prevent friction. So if you are someone who is way too active physically, then keeping one handy can help you avoid all the pain that comes with chafing!
If you don’t have an anti-chafing cream or have run out of them, then petroleum jelly can also be used. Although it is inexpensive, it’s a little messy. So, see what works best!
4. Keep your pubic hair trimmed Sometimes the hair down there can make chafing worse, so keep your pubic hair short and trimmed . But make sure you are not shaving them completely as it can make the situation even worse. Shaved skin makes the skin bare and more prone to chafing.
5. Skip underwear at night Wearing underwear all the time is a good habit, but going commando at night is okay. When you are wearing underwear your most delicate skin is protected from the rubbing of any external material. But make sure you choose the right kind of fabric for your undies . Cotton fabric is hands down the best, so ditch all the other ones!
Aren’t these tips super simple? Follow these and keep chafing in control, ladies!
