Step 1: Install Steam and SteamVR if you haven’t yet. And in case you didn’t know this already, yes – Steam is compatible with the Oculus Rift as well.
Step 2: Purchase, download, and install Virtual Desktop on Steam ($14.99).
Step 3: Open Virtual Desktop by clicking Library > Software , then click “Virtual Desktop” in the left sidebar, and then click the blue “Launch” button.
You’ll get a popup like the one below. Just click “Launch” .
Important – If you’re using an Oculus Rift , select “Launch Virtual Desktop in Other VR Mode” and click “Launch” . If you’re using an HTC Vive for watching VR porn, click “Launch Virtual Desktop in Steam VR Mode” and click “Launch” .
If you’ve done everything correctly, you’ll see this popup open on your computer. If you put the headset on at this point, you should see Virtual Desktop running.
Step 4: Now let’s get that video file open. Go to the “Videos” section at the top of the settings page, select “Open File” towards the top, and navigate to the video file you want to watch. Select the file and click “Open”.
Whenever you move the mouse (if you want to scroll to a different point in the video or adjust the settings), the video navigator will display (seen below), but it’ll fade away if you don’t move the mouse for a couple seconds.
The nicest thing about using Virtual Desktop is that it almost always opens my VR porn with the correct default settings. And it doesn’t stretch/distort the videos like the free option I’ll outline next.
If for some reason the video isn’t displaying like you think it should, tweak the “Video Mode” and/or “Video Projection” settings on the video navigator and you should be able to get it playing as it was intended.

Step 1: Download the Whirligig installer here (free) or install the Whirligig app on Steam with added features ($3.99).
Step 2: If you’re going the 100% free route, there are a few more installation steps. They’re pretty straightforward, so feel free to skip through them like we do with pretty much all installers these days.
Just in case you find it helpful, here’s the step-by-step process of getting through the Whirligig installer.
Choose whether or not you want a Start Menu shortcut
Click to finish the Whirligig installer
Selecting the options above will launch Whirligig in your VR headset.
Complete with Xbox One controller settings to the left…
Now you’re presented with an overwhelming amount of information, none of which you need to commit to memory thanks to the controls page on Whirligig’s website . Congrats! Whirligig is now installed, but you’re not quite done yet.
Step 3: Install the K-Lite codec pack so that you can play the majority of video files. Without it, you’ll encounter a lot of compatibility issues/error messages and not be able to watch many VR porn videos.
This installation process isn’t quite as straightforward as the Whirligig installer, and pay close attention toward the end because there are a couple of adware installs that you likely want to decline.
Start by downloading the Basic K-Lite codec pack here .
Choose one of the mirrors on the next page. I chose the first mirror, and was presented with the following download screen. I thought, “Which one of these do I click to download the file, and which will possibly destroy my computer?” Here’s the answer:

Click “save file” then open the installer
The default “Normal” installation is fine, click next
You don’t need to change anything here, click “Next”
Again, nothing to change; click “Next”

Check the “Run Codec Tweak Tool” and click “Finish” at the bottom
Your browser will spring open an “installation complete” confirmation; just insta-close it
Click “Preferred Decoders” in the Codec Tweak Tool
And change all options on the right to “LAV Video” all of the way down
That was a fun bit of hell, wasn’t it?! Don’t worry, we’re almost done… Restart Whirligig and let’s get your video file opened.
Step 4: Open your video using Whirligig. Refer to the Whirligig Controls page again to learn how to navigate the file explorer. With the Xbox One controller it’s a bit of a pain in the ass, because you have to scroll using head tracking and holding “A” on the scroll bar simultaneously.
Navigate to the correct folder and select the file you’d like to view:
Frequently upon opening Whirligig, you’ll get a hella weird display that makes your brain scream, “WHAT THE F**K IS HAPPENING?!!?”
Just hit ‘y’ on your keyboard or the Xbox One controller until things display in a normal (or semi-normal) fashion.

This is as good as it’s going to get with the free version of Whirligig. The image above SHOULD look more like:

This is because Whirligig’s free player only has the option for 360 degree video, and this file (like most VR porn videos on the internet right now) was recorded in 180 degree format.
If you pay $3.99 for Whirligig on Steam, you’ll have the option to view video files in 180 degrees.
So your options are to use the free version of Whirligig with the 360 degree “stretching” sacrifice, pay $3.99 for Whirligig on Steam to get the added features and watch VR porn videos in the format they were recorded in, or pay $14.99 for Virtual Desktop and get their foolproof, built-in video player along with being able to use your desktop in virtual reality.
