How do you follow up one of the biggest singles of the 1980s? Well, apparently not even a unique, gifted songstress like Kim Carnes had the answer as she was never able to recapture the success of "Bette Davis Eyes" although her subsequent albums proved she was hardly a Flash-in-the-Pan. It's just too bad the average listener was robbed of hearing her efforts on Top 40 Radio. This album's first three offerings ("Voyeur", "Looker", "Say You Don't Know Me") as well as "Undertow" are quite sinister-sounding and the title track/lead single may have been too dark for Top 40 Radio explaining why it failed to rise beyond #28 here in the fall of 1982. "Say You Don't Know Me"--the best of the four--is a great fusion of Rock and New Wave with a sax solo and hypnotic tic-toc percussion. "Does It Make You Remember" is an amazing power-ballad in Diane Warren mold that should have been a big hit. A child's chorus appears on "Breakin' Away From Sanity" to give the piano ballad some added flavour; Kim channels her inner '80s-metal-chick on "The Arrangement"; "The Thrill of the Grill" is a straight-ahead fast rocker; "Merc Man" will make you want to put on your leg warmers and Flashdance t-shirt and twirl around the room. The closer "Take It On The Chin" has a melody that was reworked for 1985's "Don't Hang Up The Phone" to better effect. "Voyeur" was the first album Kim recorded in the official MTV era and the synth-heavy production reflects that, so if you are a fan of her Country-Rock sound, this album likely won't be to your tastes, but the songs contain memorable hooks and this is as equally as good as "Mistaken Identity" and is a warm-up for some of her best work that came in the next two albums she released. FOUR STARS.
Kim Carnes’ “Voyeur”, released in 1982, had the difficult task of being the follow up to 1981’s block buster “Mistaken Identity”. The 1981 release was a #1 album and produced one of the biggest hits of the rock era, as “Bette Davis Eyes” became an anthem. “Voyeur” came a year later but the shadow of “Bette Davis Eyes” loomed large and “Voyeur” stumbled on the charts and none of the singles off “Voyeur” made an impact. Which is a shame since “Voyeur” is an overall far superior album then “Mistaken Identity”. Every song on “Voyeur”displays solid songwriting skills and superb musician ship. Title track is a kinky trip into early 80’s, rocky and haunting at the same time. “Looker” is a hypnotic rocker telling a story of the trap falls of beauty. “Say You Don’t Know Me” is an arena paranoia rocker with a pulsating beat which just works. “Undertow” is more of a melodic rocker as is “Merc Man”. “The Arrangement” is killer rocker with deep meaning, as is “Take It On The Chin”. “Thrill Of The Grill” is a fun sing a long rocker that makes great use of Carnes’ raspy pipes. Kim Carnes’ voice is her greatest strength. It cuts through you and you feel every emotion that she sings about. Just listen to “Does It Make You Remember”. A chillingly beautiful power ballad that became a Top 40 hit, “Does It Make You Remember” should have been an across the board smash but some how it didn’t happen as stations and radio programmers criminally overlook the “Voyeur” album and all the songs on it. A shame since “Voyeur” has so much to offer and further demonstrated Carnes’ talents as a singer, songwriter, lyricist and entertainer. May Thanks to Culture Factory for doing such a beautiful job of re-mastering this gem. This series is called a Vinyl Replica Collection but this is actually a great High Definition Remaster. The sound here is amazing. And preserving the iconic album cover art front and back is simply genius. The over all look is sleek and has a feel of a vinyl record in mini form. Even the disc it itself looks like the original vinyl record. Thanks Culture Factory for a job well done.
"Voyeur" was the next release from Kim Carnes following the huge success of "Mistaken Identity." It may not just as intriguing as its predecessor, but I think it holds up quite well compared to her entire back catalogue. She shines on the ballads, and her vocal delivery on ""Does It Make You Remember" is wonderful. Great guitar work on that particular track by Josh Leo and Craig Hull. This is one of several remastered Kim Carnes albums released by Culture Factory, and there is more to come in the near future. "Voyeur" has been released several times in the CD format, but this is by far the best version I've heard.
I've been looking for years for this particular album at a reasonable price and at last my search materialized. The quality is very good though somewhat enhanced comparing to the original LP but in the end of the day I'm the least concerned about modern enhancement of my favorite album by this outstanding Lady of my days of future gone forever in the sands of time. I enjoy and love it very much.
A great album. Especially if you like that BIG 80's Oberheim Synthesizer sound. This album follows the smash hit album that had Betty Davis Eyes on it, but man it goes in a totally different direction. I waited well for over 20 years for this CD release. This is a must have for a true Kim Carnes fan. (Actually one my favorite Kim Carnes albums).
The packaging on this disk is awesome, especially if you remember having the vinyl from the original issue. The inner sleeve is a reproduction of the same inner sleeve of the vinyl. It is nice having this rare music now on disk. Breaking Away From Sanity is perhaps the best and most overlooked song by Kim Carnes.
The best thing about these paper sleeve vinyl replicas are the wonderful sound and capturing of the original artwork. Kim Carnes is great and much of her catalogue is getting this treatment!! Light House and Barking at Airplanes both coming in August!! They are put out by Culture Factory USA and the are just pint-sized and terrific!! Thank you and keep um coming!!

Remastered Kim Carnes album by Culture Factory
Initially wanted the Kim Carnes album with Betty Davis Eyes song. Got the aforementioned but saw the rest of the Culture Factory Kim Carnes albums at about fiver or so each and ended up with four of them. Some reviewers of Culture Factory Were less than complimentary of the remastered sound quality which initially made me hesitate on the purchase but I can't complain as they all sound pretty good to me on the Sennheiser headphones. They were made in a limited number issue and are great if, like me, you want the albums and not a compilation.

Much Underrated Album
I bought this album when originally released in 1982 on the strength of previous albums singles 'Bette Davis Eyes' and 'Draw Of The Cards' both of which I loved....but also because I really liked the cover art! I have to say it has remained my favourite album by any artist to date! I don't understand to this day why the album bombed so spectacularly. The lead track and first single 'Voyeur' is a rock meets new-wave masterpiece with Carnes' raspy vocals on top form, followed by the equally brilliant 'Looker' with its very atmospheric production that literally sent shivers up my spine when I heard it. 'Say You Don't Know Me' and 'Make You Remember' slow the pace slightly and show off her unmistakable vocals beautifully and side one finishes with the wonderful 'Breakin' Away From Sanity' a gut-wrenching plea for help that is truly heart-breaking. After the emotional wreck that is '..Sanity' it's straight in to 'Undertow' my favourite track on the album and another intense attack on the emotions...it's desperate, it's helpless, it's relentless, it blows my mind even 30 years on. 'Merc Man' just couldn't be sung by anyone else. It's quite a fun song and Carnes nails it. 'The Arrangement' is the only weakness on the album...it's still a good track but in this company it doesn't quite cut it, unlike 'Thrill of The Grill' which is good ol' rock'n'roll at its best. And so the album finishes with 'Take It On The Chin' a stripped back production after the frenzy before it and a brilliant performance by the lady. Wonderful. I was at university in 1982 and all my friends agreed it was a great album...we'd listen to it a lot in our dorms, yet it sunk without trace, a forgotten masterpiece. But sometimes it's nice to have your own secret pleasure that no-one else knows about...isn't it?
