Die Briten hatten praktisch keine Chance zu gewinnen. Schließlich trafen zwei Staffeln in der Nähe des Hafens von Calais aufeinander. Obwohl die Spanier tapfer durchhielten (keine einzige Galeone ergab sich), waren sie dennoch gezwungen, sich unter den Schutz der schottischen Küste zurückzuziehen.
Die Briten verloren in dieser Schlacht kein einziges Schiff, aber nicht mehr als 50 Schiffe kehrten nach Spanien zurück. Und obwohl die Herrschaft Spaniens durch diese Schlacht nicht gebrochen wurde, fand die Invasion Englands nicht statt.

Es war nicht möglich, die Stadt in Bewegung zu bringen, und die Briten hatten weder Streitkräfte noch Waffen für eine lange Belagerung. Die Königin war sauer: Immerhin hatte sie viel Geld in diese Expedition investiert und sich dabei auf „ihren Piraten“ verlassen. Es schien, als hätte sich das Glück gegen Drake gewendet. Der berühmte Korsar geriet in Ungnade: Elizabeth wollte nichts von der Gewinnerin der „Invincible Armada“ hören.
Aber 1595 ändert sich die Situation. Die Queen brauchte wieder "ihren Piraten", wie sie Sir Francis nannte. Elizabeth schickte eine Expedition nach Panama. Zwei Geschwader unter dem Kommando von Drake und Hawkins sollten Drakes Kampagne wiederholen, die vor 20 Jahren begangen wurde.
Und wieder Scheitern. Die Spanier erfuhren von der britischen Expedition und bereiteten sich gut vor. Und die Lehren, die Drake selbst erhielt, waren nicht umsonst: Wo früher kleine Städte waren, erhoben sich mächtige Festungen. Auf halbem Weg durch die Reise starb Howkins. Fieber und Ruhr dezimierten die Menschen. Auch Francis Drake wurde krank. Er wurde jeden Tag schwächer und starb am 28. Januar 1596 im Morgengrauen.
Laut den Teilnehmern der Reise wurde der Bleisarg mit der Leiche von Drake in die Gewässer der Bucht von Nombre de Dios abgesenkt, "fast an dem Ort, an dem der Admiral seine Reise zum Weltruhm begann". An derselben Stelle wurden zwei Schiffe der Flottille und mehrere erbeutete spanische Schiffe als besondere Hommage an Admiral Sir Francis Drake versenkt.
Spanien feierte den Tod seines verhassten Feindes, der „Royal Corsair“, des „Devil Drake“ als Nationalfeiertag. Keine Feierlichkeiten konnten jedoch den Schaden ausgleichen, den Drake der spanischen Macht auf den Meeren zugefügt hatte.
