The peak of Mount Cinder, usually a stoic, sleeping giant against the azure sky, was breathing smoke. Not the lazy wisps of a campfire, but thick, black plumes that billowed with an alarming speed, painting the sky a bruised purple.

Panic, a cold, sharp thing, pricked at her. Neighbors, their faces etched with a dawning terror, spilled out of their homes, clutching children and meager belongings. The air grew heavy, thick with the acrid scent of sulfur. A low roar, building in intensity, shook the very foundations of their village. There was no siren, no announcement, just the earth’s fury unleashed.

'Run!' a voice, hoarse with fear, shouted from down the lane. It was all the impetus anyone needed. The narrow streets, usually alive with the chatter of market day, became a torrent of humanity, a desperate scramble away from the encroaching danger. Maria grabbed her little brother’s hand, pulling him along, her eyes fixed on the ominous glow beginning to pulse from the mountain’s caldera.

Dust began to fall, a fine, grey ash that coated everything, muting the vibrant colors of their world. The sky turned an angry, opaque grey. The distant sound of trees snapping and rocks tumbling added to the cacophony of fear. They didn’t know where they were going, only that they had to get away from the mountain that was no longer sleeping, but waking with a terrifying hunger. The familiar landscape of their lives was being erased, replaced by a primal urge to survive.
