Visual novels on Android, getting started
Note: I've not included download links or where to download them because it's against Reddit's rules. If you can't find something message me on here or Discord.
Also everything recommended is available fully in English.
There are several apps mentioned on this subreddit so here is a run down for those confused.
This has the largest compatibility list and performs the best.
There are 2 versions of this app. A Chinese version that has available for free on Github ( link ) but requires your phone language to be in Chinese or it won't start and a paid international version ( link ) that doesn't require your phone language to be Chinese. You can find cracked versions online too but of course buy it if you want to show support.
Put one of these VNs on your phone and using the app find the VN and click on data.xp3. Often you will also have to patch it. Patches are available here and there are 2 methods for patching.
90% of the time you will have to do this method: Download the patch files, extract it and move the patch files to the same place data.xp3 is. This takes about 30 seconds.
10% of the time you will have to do this method: Download the patch files, extract it and if you see "krz_xp3conv.exe", do this . This takes about 1 minute, maybe 2-3 minutes the first time.
On vndb the top 5 by rank are (only 1 per series):
PPSSPP is the simplest to use but having to use buttons can be a bit annoying, the compatibility list is also quite small.
You can download this from the Play store for free or from their website.
First download one of these VNs. Next open the app and find the folder, then click on the .iso (you should have one after extracting it). You do not need to patch anything because everything is available prepatched online.
3. VNDS Interpreter/ Visual Novel Reader:
This has a moderate amount of VNs but it's very bare bones, cutting out anything that isn't basic.
You can get Visual Novel Reader in the Play store for free but you will have to crack it to save. The better version, VNDS Interpreter isn't available anymore and I might upload it later.
Download one of these and at the base of your internal storage (not root) create a folder named "vnds", in that folder create a folder called "novels", in there put the VN you downloaded and make sure bgm and similar files are in a zip, they will not work as folders. After you have done this click auto search in Visual Novel Reader/ VNDS Interpreter and they will show up.
This is the most complicated and most unreliable, however it has a lot of potential because it can emulate an exe.
There is a paid version on Google play and a modded version available on our Discord.
This varies a lot, on our Discord we have instructions on how to get different VNs working.
Excluding the ones that work but barely:
Not much here but these don't work with the rest of the apps.
It is no longer available on the Play store but you can still get it on Apkpure.
Download one of these , then find the folder and click "OK".
It's available on the Play store for free.
Download one of these VNs and click on the arc.nsa file in the folder.
Last but not least, just the simplest to use. There are porters like SensitiveUsername (NSFW) who port VNs to Android and paid ones available on the Play store.
Also, for those who wish to run vns on external SD card, here's what I have experienced.
VNDS interpreter, PPSSPP and ONScripter are capable of running vns from external SD card but the save files are stored on the internal storage.
Android Visual Novel Reader only runs from internal storage (VNDS interpreter is better by providing more save slots but I have faced slowdown issues on Android Pie while on landscape mode, and no issues on portrait).
Exagear Windows Emulator only supports internal memory and requires your vns under the downloads folder.
Kikiriroid2 is strange as in it completely depends on what rom or android version you are running and NOT due to what external SD card you use. I have had Kirikiroid2 run vns from external SD card on Android 6, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 (7.0 and 9.0 requires you to place your vns on android/data/org.tvp.kirikiri2/files in your external SD card). I also somehow ran vns from external SD Card on Android 7.1.2 but after switching to another rom and switching back again, I couldn't run the vns anymore. I tried and exhausted all possible SD card permission fixes but to no avail. I have used multiple different SD cards to run vns successfully, this led me believe that SD card support was rom dependant. If anyone has any solutions to running Kirikiroid2 vns from external SD cards (location independent), please do share.
EDIT : Changing SELinux Mode from Enforcing to Permissive will allow you to run VNs from external SD cards on Kirikiroid2.
I purchased kirikiroid quite a while back after trying out the Chinese version with success then the ad free english (on android 4,5,6 etc.) on android 10 it no longer worked, nor on 11. However, reverting to a previous build before kirikiroid 2, I am once again able to use it and yes, on 11 I can access the games on the external sd card. So google an earlier version, on my phone there was no problem with the license being recognized despite a non-playstore source. Hope that helps those of you using android 10 or 11. I believe the new storage system is to blame.
I would advise against using VNDS unless other options are unavailable, since VNDS conversions are massively oversimplified in technical terms. Umineko can be played via ONScripter, and there is a fan RenPy Android port of Higurashi
