I've posted this photo not just because it's a beautiful cup, but in case anyone is looking to complete a set of these dishes or replace some broken ones.
I have four dinner plates, two bread and butter plates, three soup bowls and two cups and saucers in mint conditon. There is another bread and butter plate with a hideous chip that I'm going to get rid of.
The back story: these were my Great Aunt Mabel's 'good china' dishes. Born in Ottawa in the late 1890s, she lived for a while in Detroit with her husband, who gambled. Aunt Mabel apparently used to burn his winnings in the woodstove. She sent my grandmother, Gertrude, a copy of Lady Chatterley's Lover (which had been banned in Canada) and Granny apparently asked her sister if she would like her to burn the book rather than return it, since it was a POF (piece of filth).
When Great Aunt Mabel died in one of the restaurants in Ottawa's Lord Elgin Hotel at age 70 (not sure with whom she was lunching), my Aunt Pearl inherited her things. My mother loved this china though, and had always idolized her aunt Mabel. So after a year or so of non-stop lobbying, my mother got the dishes. Unfortunately this coincided with my mother's purchase of a dishwasher, and she put a lot of the pieces in the dishwasher, only to discover that they no longer had any gold decoration.
Aunt Mabel divorced her gambling husband. They had had one child, a beautiful boy who was always referred to as "Chubby" (I've never been sure why, because he wasn't). The story was that Chubby died from choking on a peanut. In fact, I have recently realized that it was anaphylactic shock that caused his death. And that there are genetic origins for my lifelong peanut allergy.
Aunt Mabel worked for many years at the Bank of Montreal on Sparks Street in Ottawa, a beautiful building with marble floors. My mother used to take me to visit her at the bank and there was always an old man there who used to give me pennies. After we had visited Aunt Mabel we would go across the street to Murphy Gamble's, one of the old classic department stores, where I was mesmerized by the whiteness of the elevator lady's gloves, the redness of her lipstick, and the glossy blackness of her hair. And then, while my mother looked at clothes, I would carefully lift the skirts of all the mannequins to see if they were wearing underpants or not (why? I have no idea). The results of my first poll, taken around 1960: approximately 90 per cent of the mannequins were indeed wearing underpants. And there were no visible panty lines.
