In many Asian cities, where the cost of living is high and careers often come first, it's hard for people to find a partner. Online dating has become accepted, but new solutions to the rising number of lonely singles have emerged.
In Singapore, men and even some women are choosing to rent a date instead of looking for long-term love.
This isn't prostitution, which has long been legal in Singapore. The businesses offering dates for rent go out of their way to ensure their services are squeaky clean - some agencies ban physical contact and encourage their girls to call management if anything goes awry.
Singaporean agencies such as Maybe.sg and SG VIP Escorts provide what is described as the "girlfriend experience", but the owner of one of the companies says some clients do expect more than just a platonic date.
Maybe.sg provides male and female dates, with its prices ranging from S$80 (US$58) to S$380 for a minimum of two hours. The site's members specify the age groups they will go on dates with - almost without exception people in their 20s - and suggest the kinds of outings they enjoy, with innocent activities such as escape games, karaoke and cafe hopping especially popular.
The company founder, a twenty-something who wishes to be known only as Sora, says he realised there was a demand for the service when his friends complained about not being able to meet potential dates in nightclubs and bars.
"Maybe.sg is like Tinder, but with a guarantee that you won't be catfished [lured into a fake dating scam]," he says. "Guys from all walks of life use our services.
"But sometimes the girls tell me that a particular client is married or has made sexual requests. And some clients are not just looking for a girlfriend experience, but hope that a relationship will result from these arranged dates."
SG VIP Escorts was set up in 2017 by a Singaporean man in his 20s who wants to be identified only as Richard. He started out by approaching women to work with his agency, but eventually managed to secure a solid stable of members through online marketing.
His company's rates range from S$600 to S$1,400 for an hour, and can go up to S$10,000 for "special events", such as public events lasting four hours.
"The women who work with SG VIP Escorts are either Singaporeans or permanent residents who have experience as escorts or being sugar babies," he says, referring to young women who enter into financial arrangements with older men that typically involve sex.
"Most of them are working professionals or pursuing further studies. This part-time job allows them to arrange their working hours around other commitments," Richard says.
He believes the growth of the on-demand economy is driving the rent-a-date trend.
"My clients are mainly expats and career-focused locals in their 30s and 40s. Some people might think that men who rent dates are not capable of wooing women, but many of them are quite smooth," he says. "They've just made a decision to concentrate on work.
"To them, time equals money and they don't want to commit to another person emotionally and financially, so they rent dates instead."
Many of Richard's clients aren't ready for marriage yet and are "just like guys who head out with their friends, online gamers who form clans, people who use rent-a-friend services and men who become sugar daddies".
These niche businesses have come into being to cater to people looking for different forms of companionship.
"Most of my clients ask for someone who isn't too tall or too short. Slim, but 'slim' is relative. Some want a girl who feels 'unattainable', while others want a girl they can feel a human connection with right away. Most of all, they want someone with substance. Some of the women who work with me are flirty with clients and that helps," Richard says.
Asked whether many of his clients expected more than the girlfriend experience on offer, he says that some called to extend their dates and often requested the same companion again. Dates are urged not to provide their personal details to clients.
"My business is made up of people and my job is to provide the who, when and where that clients want," Richard says.
"I am frank with the information I share with them and if they have very specific requests in terms of appearance, I might advise them to wait until the right lady is available for booking. I cannot break that trust between agency and client."

Want an escort on demand? There’s an app for that

There are online marketplaces for anything from private jets to cleaners, so it was only a matter of time before "paid dates," or escorts, came next.
An app called Ohlala launched in Germany earlier this year in a bid to take the Tinder-style concept of meeting people and setting up dates a step further – by letting woman set a price for men to go out with them.
Describing the app in an interview, the founder said it's in between an escort service and a dating app.
"We don't know what is happening on the dates, so I can't confirm that it's an escort service. When the matching is taking place, all of what is happening is agreed upon in the chat," Pia Poppenreiter, chief executive of Ohlala, told CNBC by phone ahead of the Slush technology conference in Helsinki, Finland.
"I think we are in between dating apps and explicit escort sites. It's more private and we are very straightforward and not pitching it on finding the love of your life. We are saying you can have fun for a certain amount of time. People always know what the others are looking for."
Women are able to sign up to the service, upload a profile, add their preferences and a minimum price. Then a man can search for what he is looking for.
The app then matches two people and a price is agreed. The two people can chat and agree on a date. All the money is exchanged in cash with the possibility of card transactions being introduced later.
Poppenreiter is not new to the app game. Last year, she launched an app called Peppr which connected people to prostitutes. She discontinued the controversial app because the model of on-demand prostitutes did not work out. She said that there weren't enough connections so people waiting a couple of hours would give up using the app.
Ohlala only lets men seek for paid dates with women. She said this was a better move because on Peppr "there was not a single booking from women."
"I just learned from Peppr even if women want to go on paid dates, they have a different agenda, and it's not an impulse booking, they want to solve a problem. They write emails for a while, and then meet men offline. Men however are straightforward," Poppenreiter told CNBC.
Ohlala has raised a small amount of early investment funds but the co-founder did not reveal how much because it was confidential. She said she is currently in talks to raise another round which would be "over 1 million dollars."
Currently the service has 13,000 people signed up and Poppenreiter said there are 10 men to one woman, adding that "the dynamic works well."
Ohlala launched in Berlin in August and is available in an additional three German cities. The firm is hoping to expand in the near-term, but that will depend on the city's attitude.
"We are evaluating right now and it will be somewhere with a liberal attitude, we will decide on this in the next two months," Poppenreiter said.

AN 18-YEAR-OLD student has put her virginity on an infamous auction website called “Cinderella Escorts”, with bids starting at $150,000.
AN 18-YEAR-OLD has put her virginity on an infamous auction website that claims to have doctors who verify the girls have not had sex.
Kim, who is half Austrian and half German, said she has signed up to the sinister site Cinderella Escorts in order to buy a flat, car and to pay for her studies, The Sun reports .
While for many people, their first time should be something special, Kim is going for the big money. Bidding for the 173cm-tall Kim starts at £86,640 ($150,531) — 20 per cent goes as a fee to Cinderella Escorts, according to local media .
The Cinderella Escorts website says virginity is proven with a doctor’s certificate and a potential buyer can also do their own tests to “inspect” the girl.
According to German local media, the young woman contacted a specialist escort agency selling virgins for millions with the words: “Hello, my name is Kim and I would like to sell my virginity. I would like to study in Germany or Vienna. With the money I can buy a flat, pay my tuition fees and afford a car.”
On the website, Kim states she likes drinking orange juice and loves Greek food and roses. Kim says she is willing to meet with the highest bidder anywhere in the world as long as all travel is paid for.
“So is it really worth more than 2.3 million euro to give my virginity to a man who might eventually leave me anyway? To be honest, I do not believe it,” the young woman said.
The student was inspired by Aleexandra Khefren, an 18-year-old Romanian model who sold her virginity for £2 million ($3.47 million) to an unnamed businessman from Hong Kong .
The case first came into the public eye in the UK after Aleexandra appeared on This Morning to discuss her plan to sell her virginity . She told presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield she needed to raise the money to stop her struggling parents being evicted and to pay for university fees.
She said Cinderella Escorts will be accompanying her to the meeting with her buyer, who she said seems “very friendly”. However her family have not been as supportive as she might have hoped — threatening to disown her when the news went public.
Ms Khefren’s dad Toni, a riot cop, and mum Elena, a pharmacist, begged her to not go through with the deal and reportedly promised to cut her off if she goes ahead with the auction.
But in March Aleexandra said the “hotel is [already] booked” for the big night, and she has already spoken with her “buyer”, who is an unnamed businessman from Hong Kong.
“I wanted to sell my virginity with Cinderella Escorts rather than giving it to a future
