Vintage Web
Recently, I saw a very nice collection of vintage ads posted by Abduzeedo (via Digg ). Speaking of vintage design, I also have a nice collection of vintage websites that I dug up from my old bookmarks and Best Web Gallery submissions. I’m not a big fan of vintage design, but if you want to see more vintage inspiration, here are 23+ sites.
Warning: some of the sites that you are about to view might be very old (click at your own risk)
I’m not sure if it is a trend or what, but vintage design seems to be very popular on travel and tour sites. Below are three great samples.
This is one of my favorite sites. The design itself is not so “vintage” (in fact, very eye-catchy), but the designer did a great job on blending vintage elements with modern web design and coding technology.
Another eye-catchy site. I particularly like the homepage and the highway signs.
The details spent on this site is extensive. Don’t be shy to click around or you will miss out the inner pages (almost every page or section has a different layout).
One common subject, they like to use sexy models. Below are some samples.
This is one of my favorite ecommerce sites. From design to coding, the overall site is nicely done.
Ok, this is a very old site. If you have been in the industry for a long time, you have probably seen this site (it was quite popular back then). I first saw it back in 2003 – 2004(?), but she is still looking hot.
Another common subject, beside sexy models they like to use classic cars.
They also like collage style, torn paper and worn-out photo effect.
Here are more vintage sites, enjoy.
Most of you is probably familar with Cameron Moll’s website. Good use of CSS and typography, and of course very retro.
A newly launched retro design by Jonathan Longnecker and Nate Croft.
check out my weekly update Best Web Gallery for more inspiration.
This gallery should inspire me in creating new sites :) Thank`s a lot..
Nice! I’m always vintage at heart. Thanks for the lists.
Nice Collection! Good to see a showcase of a different kind. I love vintage.
Some new ones in there I’ve not seen before but I just love the Tennessee Vacation site – go back to it again and again.
Mouse to Minx is also one of my favorites. The way the design totally hits the target group is just amazing.
Great collection! Wish to see more collections for other styles also. :)
Good job!
The 247Media Lana Landis is really an oldie, but goldie. Like Spadewerk – clean and vintage…
That’s not really vintage web design. Vintage web design would be:
* a one-colour background (usually grey) or a background full of colour-clashing patterns
* Liberal use of Blink and Marquee
* Animated GIFS
* Under Construction Signs
* Mostly center-aligned
* Have keywords EVERYWHERE
* Use graphics for blocks of text
* Have flashing ad banners
i’m currently looking at trends and/or inspiration for the redesign of my portfolio…these sites are inspiring indeed! thanks for posting!
Wow!! This is a great collection, I’m already a big fan of ‘Mouse to Minx’ and I love vintage style sites, there are a few designs on the CSS Zen Garden too that I use for inspiration as well as the Wicked Worn Look by Cameron Moll.
Great article yet again, thanks Nick!!
Wow, great collection here.. I will definitely be bookmarking some of these!!
Amazing collection, I love vintage and vintage style in web design is not very common.
Thanks for this list.
Lovely article, though I wouldn’t have counted the first two as ‘vintage’ design. The rest are fine examples though. Good work!
Lol nick – your site itself is somewhatvintage as well. the colors, the papers idea….
Papelcontinuo.net is vintage too ;-)
The Jackson fishmarket site was a nominee at the recent Crunchies 2007 awards.
Cool list of vintage sites.
Nicey! Don’t suppose anyone knows of any sites in a Vaudeville style?
I’m a big fan of vintage – thanks for this list. Without wanting to toot my own horn, my current blog design (which is currently living on borrowed time) is a reference to the ads in National Geographic that were standard cottage outhouse reading. People who like vintage might get a smile.
I was expecting a different type of vintage (particularly when I read the warning about very old sites.) Got any galleries of “vintage web design” (vs. “vintage” web design?) You know: splash screens. entrance tunnels, centered everything, 3d backgrounds, etc… :)
Thanks for the list!
Vintage webdesign is not my favourite style but I do like these sites.
The designs are very creative!
Thanks.. not a big fan either but it’s useful to take a look..
w00t. I love retro design, and this has been an awesome post to read. So, thanks!
Nice run-down Nick, I’m not sure I’ve seen all of these…
Always love a bit of retro-nostalgic throw-back’s to a by-gone era!!
Thanks for this, I love retro and vintage designs. The Tennessee Vacation has been a favourite site of mine to visit, even though I live in Sydney, Australia. Thanks for all the new sites I can visit, my new fave is Mouse to Minx, not only for the design but also for the content and shopping!
This is a great collection. I would love to see a list of website that are both retro vintage looking but with Search Engine Optimization taken into account!
wow… these are the great collection of vintage style websites. Good work! Thanks
All the designs are very creative and amazing. Thanks for sharing.
They are all lovely. I like it! Thanks
fantastic collection. I really like them.
These designs are cool! I love vintage on the web because its something that is kinda… alian to digital work.
awesome collection. I dont think I made it past the sexy models though, they are beautiful….the websites i mean.
Not only are they aesthetically pleasing graphics, there’s a chance that a ‘vintage’ design may also be a great way to attract an older crowd to websites by presenting them with a familiar visual reference (if that’s what the site is after) …so long as you’re also tackling usability!
Hi, thanks for another greate collection!! But, well… i don’t know, i dont like all sites! But vintage is a trend anyway!!
Here are couple design agencies that have embraced the vintage style into their own web sites.
Oh how refreshing after seeing gradients after gradients!!!
More on Vintage webdesign:
starry background images (preferably animated).
A huge (at least 500k) logo made with Xara 3D (made in less then 5 mins).
Pre-css style hyperlinks (blue is difficult to find on a dark heavy background).
Many dead links.
Filled with ani gifs saying the site is optimized for IE and netscape and such…
There should be a museum for this.
P
I’m liking this rebellion against the web 2.0 gradient fest we have been getting used to. I love the site for Michel Gondry’s new film Be Kind Rewind, where it erases the internet, and then recreates it out of cardboard and play-doh… genius.
Great Collection, thanks! Vintage Design can be really powerful and beautiful too.
hi, i want a comment box script!!!!!!!!!!
Great resource. I´m working on a vintage design actually and this is a great inspiration =)
It’s really great… thank you very much.
This sites have a nice graphic composition.
Cheerssss and sorry my bad english XD
Awesom collection of websites as usual.
wow. speechless, really a awesome collection!!!
You should have a look at Design Meltdown. They have three pages of web designs that use an old retro style.
I must agree on many of the comments…GREAT collection above!
I think Vintage Web Design separates the Real Web Designers from the guys that “think that it’s all in the coding”…incorporating and displaying excellent graphic design skill along with art and typography; which allows the designer to express his own flare for design.

super site collection…
All of them are very interesting sites..
Thanks
most design are attractive but the content is not recognizable coz in the first view of the page all I have seen are images…
In Brazil, the use of advertising agencies very relances the years 30-50 to make their portfolios, perhaps by giving a classic touch of tradition to their work.
Thanks for this article.
Some of these design are very good, congratulations but some of them are very overburden.
The should divide content from design,
Nice post interesting topic you have a good writing skills thanks for sharing..
vintage is still alive. i love this collections, thx :D
This style is not my style, besides that i have respect for all the webdesigners of these websites. There are much ideas to find in every website.
I think one of the things to take away from sites like these is how the customer is forced to explore all of the details on the page. It gets them more involved with the content and they become interested in exploring all of the different parts of the site, just for the fun of seeing how it works. In the process they are seeing everything the company has to offer. Entertaining and informing the consumer is achieved with these types of sites.
You can’t leave out the award winning best vintage designed website ever! http://www.pixelgasoline.com/
All of the designs are amazing, and the one posted below is extremely one of the best designs I’ve ever seen.
A gorgeous bunch of designs, Nick. Truly inspiring and just what I need for my next layout which I should really start getting a crack at :)

cool vintage website CSS design
These are great , but very hard to find clients that want vintage design.
Some of those websites are freaking awesome. Now everytime I look at something I do, I get sad and go hide under a rock. =p
Awesome list of sites. Vintage is cool.
My money is on early Web design becoming retro e.g. lots of animated gifs and poor picture quality. Maybe even sticking to ‘Web Safe’ colours for old times sake.
Cool collection. I love the vintage type designs and their posters. Avalon Rose, looks well put together.
This is very nice collection of Vintage style websites. thanks!
