The reason I’m using “drag queen” in double quotes is because I’m not entirely sure if these people were transgender, cross-dressers, dressing up as women for theatrical purposes or just for the of fun it. The pictures, which were discovered by accident, are set to go on display in Britain to shed light on a fascinating and pioneering weekend retreat for heterosexual cross-dressing men
Extraordinary pictures documenting the lives of heterosexual men who dressed as women almost 70 years ago have been unearthed.
The pictures showing straight men posing in dresses wearing wigs, make up and heels and even on a Christmas card give an insight into a forgotten world.
They were taken at Casa Susanna -- a little-known refuge for heterosexual transvestites in the 1950s and early 1960s in the Catskills, New York
The images seen here were discovered at a Manhattan flea market by an antiques dealer, Robert Swope, and the collection was later published in a book, Casa Susanna (powerHouse, 2005).
Now they form part of an exhibition at Barbican Art Gallery Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins .
It is one of the highlights of the venue's 2018 season The Art of Change .
The photos document the secret lives of men dressing as women in a time when the practice was less well known.
In the striking, weathered, vintage snapshots, they are playing bridge, having cocktails and posing for the camera.
Another Kind of Life follows the lives of individuals and communities operating on the fringes of society from America to India, Chile to Nigeria.
The exhibition reflects a more diverse and complex view of the world, as captured and recorded by photographers working from the 1950s through to the present day.
Driven by personal and political motivations, many of the photographers sought to provide an authentic representation of the disenfranchised communities with whom they spent months, years or even decades with, often conspiring with them to construct their own identity through the camera lens.
