Victoria Grace says: An elegant shot of an elegant woman!
Victoria Grace says: What a wonderful portrait of a group of elegant and sophisticated ladies. I think it's a terrific glimpse of 1950's Black Americana!

Victoria Grace says: Beah Richards (1924-2000) was an actress and writer who became best known for strong female portrayals. She was able to bring strength, integrity, and wisdom to her characterizations, and in addition to being an actress, was a talented playwright. Two of her favorite characters of mine would have to be Sidney Poitier's mother Mrs. Prentice, in the 1968 groundbreaking classic "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner'. A key powerful scene is a speech she gives to two prejudicial men, one White--one Black--about the interracial relationship of their children. In this speech, every bit of her power as a gifted actor comes through. My other personal favorite character of hers is unfortunately, her last film role, as a strong matriarch of a family, "Baby Suggs", who's love is so powerful, it reaches from her grave, in the Post-Civil War set horror film "Beloved". To learn more about this amazing woman and amazing actress, I highly recommend an HBO documentary made on her life by Lisa Gay Hamilton, called Beah: A Black Woman Speaks. www.imdb.com/title/tt0350596/ Beah Richards was truly an underrepresented screen powerhouse, and a remarkable talent.
Victoria Grace says: I love going through the images and articles of vintage Black magazines such as Jet, Ebony, and the lesser-known publications such as "Sepia". Women of all colors, kinds, and looks were featured on these covers, displaying the latest of 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's fashion...hair was immaculate, makeup was immaculate, and a sparkling image of the Black American was presented in direct response to the degrading or simply nonexistent imagery of African-Americans prevalent amongst the White press. These magazines are such a crucial part of our history.
Victoria Grace says: These ladies are STYLIN'!
Victoria Grace says: What a lovely face!
Victoria Grace says: The beautiful styles of the 1940's are a favorite of mine.
Victoria Grace says: Her hairstyle is so intricate and very unique. Pretty girl!
Victoria Grace says: This woman could be anybody's grandmother...mother...sister...aunt. It was a lovely summer day in 1968--the expression on her face, a mixture of warmth, experience, and a curious knowledge of something that is unknown. I wonder what thoughts were passing through her mind?
Victoria Grace says: I first discovered the wonderful Claudia McNeil (1917-1993) in the magnificent 1961 film based on the Lorraine Hansberry play of a Black family aspiring for a brighter future, "A Raisin In The Sun". In this story, McNeil portrays the matriarch of a family who's love and strength is the tie that binds them together through both bad and good times. Her performance is RAW CINEMATIC POWER. She forever left an indelible mark in a film that is quite simply, a masterpiece. See it, you'll love it! www.imdb.com/title/tt0055353/ and for information on this majestic actress: www.aaregistry.com/detail.php?id=2506
Victoria Grace says: She is ready and raring to sew a cute outfit and go out for a night on the town!
