Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which causes inflammation and damage to various parts of the body. It occurs when the body's defense system produces antibodies that attack your own tissues, rather than the immune system protecting the body from infections as normally. This disease is nine times as common in women as in men. Lupus affects approximately 1.5 million Americans, and is two to three times more prevalent among women of color—African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders—than among white women.
Joint and muscle pain is often one of the first signs of lupus, especially in the small joints of the hands and feet.
A butterfly-shaped rash or one that appears on sun-exposed skin. You may also develop groups of mouth ulcers.
Diagnosis of Lupus may be difficult and take months, due to symptoms that may imitate those of other diseases.

Inside the Box of Race and Religion in America
Anyone that lives in the USA is very familiar with the common practice of checking off the boxes that ask us to identify yourself by race and/or religion. Most applications for employment, credit, government, and other companies such as housing may ask for this information.
As African Americans, we draw our own conclusions as to the true reasons for these questions. Do we accept the sometimes given explanation of ‘for statistical purposes’? Or do many of us feel that’s it’s just another tool of discrimination to be used against us? One has to ask, “What does my race and religion have to do with what I’m seeking?” At work functions, will your religious and cultural practices be recognized and respected? It’s highly possible that you would have to have a trip to the HR Department when they’re not. Granted, in recent years these disclosures are sometimes listed as ‘optional’ the point is they’re still requested. Does your employer really need to know whether you’re Black, White Hispanic, Asian or whether you’re a qualified applicant for the position?
In our current climate of protests against racist rogue policing and rampant social injustice against people of color, it would seem more important than ever to seek controls and end the use of this type of information except when necessary. Examples would include medical, school, DMV, and the Census. One could argue, that your race shouldn’t even be used for voting purposes. How many Black people voted for a candidate means what exactly? Systemic racism in America now has the spotlight that might give us some fuel to eliminate the boxes that have kept us denied.
Until THAT day, I was “Miss Bev,” or just plain “Bev.” Above-the-knee dresses, stiletto shoes, fitted suits and an asymmetrically-cropped hair style that screamed a resounding youthfulness. Energetic and optimistic, I had things to do, places to be and people to see. Although I stayed in my own lane, my “youthfulness” echoed through and through, from the style of clothes I wore to the kind of car I drove (a Honda Civic, at the time).
On the job, I commanded everyone’s attention within my sphere of contact. From the president of the institution for which I worked, to the janitor. Any request I made or departmental service I needed was cheerfully granted, followed by a “Gladly, Miss Bev. Will there be anything else, Miss Bev?”
My “play” included clubbing and dancing, which claimed 3 to 4 of my nights a week. To keep things fresh, I would switch up between club dancing and evening Jazzercise. On weekends, I played co-ed soccer and a friendly game of golf. But, I was STILL Miss Bev, still in motion, and was still having my fun.
One day, a mailroom clerk said to me, “Ma’am, you’ve become so busy lately, you rarely have time to speak with us anymore.” Shortly after that, a colleague with whom I’d interacted regularly, responded to me with, “Yes, ma’am…I will speak with that student.” I had been taken aback by the word “Ma’am.” Who is that? Utterly foreign to me in that context, and it was almost offensive.
That same evening, I went home from work and thought about what had transpired that day, as I slipped off my elasticized, waist- lined skirt. I kicked off my Coach loafers and unfurled my hair which, had by now grown long enough to be gathered in a bun at the nape of my neck. I approached the mirror and studied the image before me. Was I not the same person I had been before ‘suddenly’ becoming a “ma’am?”
The truth was, NO. In addition to my utilitarian wardrobe and lack-luster hairstyle, I had even lost my youthful figure. In part, menopause was responsible for my 45 year-old body changes. However, the extra “apron” worn around my mid-section was owed in equal part, to lingering a little longer than necessary at the banquet table of the President’s football tailgates. I had allowed my thighs to thicken by laboring, beyond constructive duty, while seated at the conference table to decide the fate of a stake-holder. I had become so busy racking up “At-a-girl” plaques and golf trophies, that I hadn’t paid attention to and missed the gradual change that had been not so “sudden” at all. As the “At-a-girls” lengthened, so did my hemlines. Soon, my soccer playing days had been kicked to the curb, in exchange for more Tee times on the golf course.
I wanted a refreshed, alluring hair style. I missed my dancing legs. I, yearned for that strident step in my high heeled shoes. I wanted my waistline back!
Nowadays, as a woman of a certain age, I am perfectly content with being a “ma’am”. I have earned it. At 45ish, however, I just was not ready to succumb to anyone calling me ma’am. And by the time I was 50, I was completely burned out with work and the strife of life that I had created.
Most of us want the aging process to be a graceful one. In order to do that, I advise younger versions of myself to live, work and play in moderation. It has taken almost a decade since retirement to normalize. Many of us won’t have that luxury. Be gentler with yourself, and get to know the Ma’am.
