The 1988 vintage for Bordeaux was generally excellent.
A cold, wet winter gave way to an equally claggy spring, which predictably made rot an issue. Although temperatures fortunately never dropped low enough for frost damage to occur, the soggy humid weather, however, was still enough to hamper both budburst and flowering. The Left Bank was particularly affected by the damp and some producers were forced to spray to prevent rot and disease. Summer thankfully brought hot, dry weather with August seeing particularly high temperatures especially in the Médoc and conditions looked to be idyllic in the run-up to the harvest. Unfortunately, September saw humid rains return which both resurrected fears of rot as well as delayed the maturation of later-ripening grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon , particularly in regions like the Médoc. The dread of rot forced some producers to pick earlier than they would have otherwise and a few, faced with underripe grapes, chose to chaptalize. Once in, the resulting harvest was one of the largest in years.
Despite the various difficulties throughout the growing season, the resulting wines were surprisingly good. In general, beautifully ripened Merlot on the Right Bank served to elevate both the wines from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol with Pomerol perhaps having the edge as Saint-Émilion was held back by the some slightly green Cabernet Franc . For the Left Bank, the wines tended to be slightly more underripe although some good wines were made from Pessac-Léognan and excellent examples emerged from Médoc, Graves and Pauillac . Some of the top wines from the Médoc had great capacity to age with many only unveiling their full potential and complexity after ten years or so in the bottle. Alongside the reds, some fine examples of dry whites were also produced.
Overall, the 1988 vintage for Bordeaux stopped short of legendary but some extremely good wines were made with the very best examples likely to still be drinking well now.

Macanudo Vintage 1988 brings a whole other level to the bestselling premium cigar brand in the US. From the days before the cigar boom General cigar company kept away some of its very best tobacco because the quality did not match the quantity. Hiding away from over 30 years these babies come back from the past with even better flavor and mildly smooth strength creating a luxurious and buttery cloud of smoke on your palate taking you back to the time before the boom and beyond. Really one of the most outstanding Macanudo’s I have ever smoked. Bringing the past to present and maintaining the same price is quite a feat with this exceptional cigar. Aged for over 30 years this cigar is solid and only got better like a fine wine! Enjoy this cigar especially in the morning with a coffee or anytime when the time is right to enjoy smoking such a fine cigar. ...Read More
The cigar was my third choice but was all that was left. They are the smallest size and suffer somewhat from that. However they are the smallest size of the best cigars Macanudo ever made. They are also probably the last remaining ones to be found
Fantastic smoke! I tried some years ago and now, with age, they just keep getting better.
