The difference between the Paladin and Dark Knight transformations are insignificant and mostly visual. You may choose whichever Path appeals to you. Initial stat bonuses are identical. An apparent difference are the Active: Conviction and Active: Fissure. You may choose a Path depending on which active appeals to you more. There are some differences between the function of each Path's skills.

Dark Knight is more offensive, Paladin is more defensive. With current endgame equipment, there isn't a big difference, because you will use it primary for full heal, extended range and removed hit-drag and that is same for both paths.

Dark Knight will help you in the beginning when you don't have your attack capped against bosses. Paladin is better for min/maxing since it provides a bonus to DEF.
Dark Knight is MUCH more useful getting to end-game because stamina is so nice to have, while Paladin don't have anything really that useful. The attack doesn't matter because it's gonna reach attack cap (clarification: the path skill that gives attack doesn't go past the attack cap, but the stats from +STR path points do go past the attack cap).

A dark knight on the other hand has Revelation: ATT which can increase ATT up to +1500. Thus, the paladin takes less damage and the dark knight deals more. Since Absorb Shock does not absorb all of the damage that Karok takes, I find that the increased DEF of a paladin is more effective on pillar Karok. It is the player's choice however.

2 There are viable builds that give you loads of stamina (gotta love armadillo) and dark knight stamina boost is kind of overkill for pretty much every class that is not chain vella. (i.e your damage will be suboptimal if you use that much stamina consecutively unless its on a sandbag) 3 Nobody will stigmatise you for picking one over the other.

It IS the Blood Lord, the Emperor was before Rise, now you face the Emperor after beating the "Blood Prince" quest during which you turn into a Paladin, much like when the player turns into Dark Knight in the quest "Prepare for Counter Attack."
