Villanova, Drexel NCAA Tournament lines, and why one Vegas sportsbook is sweating out Michigan
Villanova is favored as expected, but one national analyst already has picked Winthrop to win outright.
Drexel was 4-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association during the regular season, so yeah, hardly anybody outside of 34th & Market gave them much of a chance to win the conference tournament and get to the NCAAs for the first time in 25 years.
“The only thing I knew about Drexel is there was a guy named Bruiser Flint who was their coach for a while,” joked Nick Bogdanovich, director of trading for William Hill-US sportsbook. “That’s about all I know about Drexel.”
Drexel (12-7 overall) quietly was one of the better teams in the nation against the spread, going 12-5-2 (70.6%). The Dragons, the No. 16 seed in the Midwest Regional, opened as 23.5-point underdogs to top-seeded Illinois for Friday’s first-round game. The total is 145 points.
Some of the blue blood was drained from Villanova after losing Big East co-player of the year Collin Gillespie to a torn ACL on March 3. The Wildcats lost their two games without their star point guard and are favored by 6.5 points against Winthrop on Friday (total 139 points). CBS analyst Seth Davis said Winthrop was going to win outright.
“The main deal is injuries and what they’re worth,” Bogdanovich added. “What is Gillespie’s injury worth? Is it two points? Is it three points? Five points?”
Drexel’s last appearance in the NCAAs was with Public Leaguers Malik Rose and Jeffrey “Jay” Myers in 1996, when they won the North Atlantic Conference (which was three leagues ago) under Bill Herrion (who was three coaches ago).
They are led now by Zach Spiker, who succeeded Flint five years ago.
“It’s one of the classic coaching names of all-time: BRUISER FLINT,” Bogdanovich said. “You definitely don’t want to throw a punch at a guy named Bruiser Flint.”
Gonzaga is a No. 1 seed for the third time in the last four tournaments. The Zags won their opener by 20 in 2017 and by 38 in 2019.
Remember, no betting on Rutgers in New Jersey where wagering on state schools is prohibited. Psst: It’s legal in Pennsylvania.
Drake (20-6-1) was the best team against the spread, according to TeamRankings.com. The worst team against the spread is Michigan State (9-18).
Rick Pitino is 17-4 in NCAA Tournament openers. This will be a little different for him, however. Pitino is at Iona, which opened as a 16-point underdog to SEC champion Alabama.
Michigan is the team Bogdanovich is sweating out the most as far as futures liability. He’s written a $30,000 ticket at 8-1 and then another $30k at 11-2. Way early on, a bettor put up $1,000 at 125-1 on the Wolverines, the No. 1 seed in the East Regional. “They whacked us pretty good with Michigan, but that’ll change in the next four days,” he said early Sunday. “We’ll get some good liability on a good couple teams.”
Covering sports betting and the Sixers' postseason run before heading into the sunset. Did not have Phil at 250-1 to win the PGA.

Live Villanova odds at PA online sportsbooks
Are you a fan of one of the most storied teams in NCAA Division I college basketball history? The Villanova University Wildcats have given the state so much over the years, most Pennsylvanians are big supporters.
They remember the perfect game in 1985 when the Rollie Massimino-coached Wildcats shot almost 80 percent as a team to shock John Thompson’s Georgetown Hoyas and win the school’s first ever National Championship. Most also remember that Villanova was a lowly eight seed in the tournament that year. They remain the lowest-seeded team ever to win the NCAA tournament.
They also remember the perfect ending in 2016, when Villanova forward Kris Jenkins hit a three-pointer as time expired to give the Wildcats a 77-74 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels and the school’s second National Championship. Most will also recall that shot made Villanova the only team ever to win the NCAA tournament on a buzzer-beater.
Villanova also defeated Michigan in the championship just three years ago to win its third National Championship and second in three years.

New Jersey imposes restrictions on college sports betting. NJ sportsbooks cannot take bets on games that involve New Jersey schools or take place in New Jersey.
Fortunately, Pennsylvania does not impose these same restrictions and Wildcat fans can find lines on Villanova games posted at all licensed PA sportsbooks.
However, be advised that, while it is very difficult to police, students and faculty at Villanova are technically not supposed to bet on their athletic squads. Team members and athletic department staff are not permitted to bet per PGCB regulations, but no sportsbook will stop a Villanova student with no connection to the team from betting, so long as they are 21 and located within the state.
The basic college basketball bets available at PA sportsbooks are:
A line bet in college basketball is quite similar to a point spread bet in football. Sportsbooks post the line on a Wildcats game with the same positive (+) or negative (-) number beside each of the teams.
The negative number is for the team that is favored to win. The actual number represents the points the team is favored by. In order to calculate the betting winner, that number must be deducted from the favorite’s total score. The same positive number means the team is an underdog and the points should be added to that team’s total score to determine the betting winner.
Ultimately, you must pick the winner with the posted line factored in. Sportsbooks will usually make the odds -110 on all line bets. That means you’ll have to bet $110 to win $100 plus your bet back on either side.
Totals are exactly like the over/under in a football game.
Sportsbooks set a line on the total number of points both teams will combine to score in a single game. Then it’s up to you to decide if the actual total will be over or under that number and bet on it.
Just like line bets, sportsbooks will make the odds -110 on all totals. That means you’ll have to bet $110 to win $100 plus your bet back whether you like the over or the under.
Futures are bets made on something where the outcome will not be determined until a future date.
Traditionally, NCAA futures are bets on who will win National Championship before the season starts. However, most sportsbooks will book futures all season long and into the NCAA tournament on any team, as long as the team still in contention.
Sportsbooks offer players the chance to combine two or more of these basic bets into parlays. Parlays normally pay better than individual bets. However, you have to win all the bets that are part of it for a parlay to pay at all.
The traditional way most Pennsylvanians have always bet on March Madness is through NCAA tournament bracket sheets they enter into office pools or contests at local bars and social clubs. These paid office and bar pools are actually illegal.
However, Pennsylvania sportsbooks now run legal pools and bracket contests of their own, which lets you bet on March Madness the same way you always have plus bet on individual March Madness games.
Filling out a tournament bracket sheet for a March Madness bracket contest involves picking a winner for all 63 tournament games from the first round to the championship game before it begins. You’re not obliged to pick Villanova to win; just don’t show any locals your sheet if you don’t!
