Zane and Drake discuss and celebrate 'Views.'

On the cover of his fourth studio album Views , Drake looks down from atop Toronto’s CN Tower, paying homage to the city’s notoriously frigid winter temperatures in a heavyweight shearling coat and high-cut boots. He looks less like the superhero he’d made himself into over the course of a roughly six-year rise as singer-songwriter extraordinaire and more like a troubled monarch. Views , which followed two wildly successful projects in 2015 that he’d branded as mixtapes— If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and the Future collab What a Time to Be Alive —would confirm him as both, his penchant for immaculate songwriting still fully intact and the pressures of existing as the most popular voice in rap, as well as his hometown’s most successful export, weighing heavy on his mind. “I made a decision last night that I would die for it,” Drake raps on “9.” “Just to show the city what it takes to be alive for it.” Drake’s presence eclipsed Toronto just about as soon as So Far Gone dropped, but the city—and what it thinks of him—was never far from his mind. There are references here to specific people (“Redemption”), places (“Weston Road Flows”), and experiences (“Views”), along with nods to the influence of the city’s Caribbean population on “With You,” “Controlla,” and “Too Good” (which just happens to feature Rihanna). He isn’t too much for the world, though, ruminating on his position as one of music’s biggest names—and those who’d rather he wasn’t—on songs like “Still Here,” “Hype,” and “Grammys.” Maybe the the most affecting acknowledgment to this end is the fact that “Hotline Bling,” a strong contender for 2015 song of the summer, was such an afterthought by the time Views was released that it appears here as a bonus track. For all intents and purposes, the Drake of Views is the same one we got on If You’re Reading This and What a Time , but if his previous proper album ( Nothing Was the Same ) foretold anything, it’s that the man peering down from CN Tower sees things differently than the rest of us.

Views is Drake’s fourth studio album.
Drake announced on August 6, 2014 that the title of his next album would be Views From The 6. Drake would shorten it to VIEWS closer to the album release to make it less Toronto-centric, because The 6 is a nickname for Toronto, coming from the city’s two major area codes.
The build-up for the album has been bigger than any of his albums, thanks to the long delay between 2013’s Nothing Was The Same and 2016—his longest break between albums to date.
Additionally, there were many songs that leaked that were assumed to be made for Views, such as “Can I?” (although this was played on OVO Sound Radio after the leak and is presumed to appear on the album ), “Go Out Tonight,” “Controlla” and “Faithful.”
Drake talked about the pressure of a long break between albums with W Magazine :
Actually, I love pressure! I’m always thinking, How do I top what I’ve done? How do I make this thing stronger? I ask myself, ‘Why does Adele’s album go diamond, and how do I do that? How do I create art that makes minds stretch further?’ I want to give many, many people many, many moments before I’m gone. That’s truly the art of what I do. It’s the only goal.
Views also gained extensive hype leading up to the release, thanks to the Meek Mill/Drake beef, which started in July of 2015. Drake’s two diss tracks— “Charged Up” and “Back to Back” —helped build anticipation. In “Back to Back,” Drake mentioned Views, in which he states:
The beef will likely be continued on Views, as well as on Meek Mill ’s Dreamchasers 4, which was rumored to be dropping on the same day as Views , but was later postponed.
Drake announced on Episode 14 of OVO Sound that Views would be coming in April. He later announced that April 29 would be the official date on Episode 19 of OVO Sound. Drake spoke about the album on that same episode:
It’s something that I’ve been working really hard on, myself and 40… Trying to craft a lifestyle track, a sound for our city. Views From The 6 won’t be a short ting. There’s a lot of music on there. You’ll have your full share of Drake music for the summer and for the year. Forever.
He tweeted about the official release date (seen below), which also showcased a Views Trailer.
The album is the first album to be released after Drake’s partnership with Apple. Views was an Apple Music exclusive for the first week , following on all other major streaming platforms the week after.
Regarding the album title, Drake, according to Songfacts , explained to Zane Lowe:
I think the announcement was more than just the album title it was a shift in the city [Toronto] – we saw an opening there. The name took on a life of its own.
Views debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 charts for the week of May 21st, 2016 , and remained there for thirteen chart weeks .
Yes. Views was certified 6x platinum by the RIAA on September 27th, 2019.
