Vietnam May Extend Trial Of Local Casino Betting

Vietnam's finance ministry has proposed extending a pilot plan to allow economically qualified Vietnamese locals to gamble at selected domestic casinos until 2024, state news outlet Bao Faflu a ̣ Vie ̣ Nam reported. Under the plan, however, the number of places allowed would not be expanded, the report added.

The pilot program was abolished in 2017 but was only activated in 2019.

Plans for the three-year trial were originally due to be reviewed next year, according to the media. Media reports, citing ministries, said the extension to 2024 was due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has not only curtailed inbound tourism trade from abroad but also affected domestic leisure activities.

Currently, only two casino projects are included in the local play pilot in Vietnam. One is the Corona Resort and Casino on the southern resort island of Phu Quoc, which opened in January 2019. The launch sparked the start of the pilot scheme.

Another place allowed for locals is the half-money plan in Quang Ninh province, which is being pursued by Vietnamese company Sun Group.

A proposal by the finance ministry to extend the country's citizen's play pilot program must be reviewed by the national prime minister and the Politburo, according to a report by Baofaflu ̣t ̣t 남t Nam on Monday.
