CHILDREN are being "exploited" by parents who film them in discomfort and pain and upload the clips to YouTube.
The popularity of kids' videos on the platform has created a lucrative industry for anyone who can tap into the enormous market.
But while many of the videos targeted at children are perfectly innocent, some disturbing clips are cropping up on YouTube.
Among them are vlogs, starring children but filmed and set-up by parents, where kids are visibly in distress, being sick or are in pain.
As the kids suffer in scenarios cooked up behind the camera, parents film the whole thing and cash in from the ad money which comes with YouTube success.
A pair of verified channels which feature clips by a father and his two young daughters are among this trend.
With 13 million subscriptions, the brand is a staple of kids' YouTube.
But the disturbing content it churns out borders on exploitation, critics claim.
In a clip with 160 million views, the father follows his daughter into the bathroom and films her bloody mouth after losing a tooth.
The young girl can be seen crying as her father shoves a camera in her face to capture the distressing moment.
This video was removed for violating YouTube's policies after we flagged it.
Another video, by the same channel, shows the girls in the bath, wearing swimwear.
The father comes in, with the camera rolling, and throws a live frog into the bath tub.
While one of the girls isn't concerned, the other screams hysterically and cries as she tries to jump out.
She shouts: "Daddy help, stop," as he films wordlessly and the other sister laughs.
Another spin on this video sees the father place a small snake in the tub with his unsuspecting daughters.
And in one clip with 50 million views, one of the girls is dressed as a baby and spoon-fed baby food, which she spits out before screaming in discomfort.
While it's not impossible that clips like this may be well acted, rather than showing any children in genuine distress, the girl's screams sound real enough.
Petitions circling online have called for the channels to be shut down, while business was booming for the dad behind it, whose millions of viewers will have been making him considerable ad revenue.
But after the Sun first spoke to YouTube about the channels, almost all of their content was removed and demonetised - and one channel was deleted entirely.
However, there are many more videos on YouTube where the lines between entertainment and exploitation are blurred.
Another verified channel features a video with over 1.5 million views showing two young boys eating disgusting flavoured jelly beans.
In the clip, one of the boys retches in a bucket as his dad urges him to eat more.
"Come on," he says and nudges his son as he is bent over, recovering.
Another, much smaller channel uploaded a copy-cat video of the same jelly bean challenge.
In the clip, set to cheery playground music, a boy is physically sick onto the table.
Smiling afterwards, he says to the camera: "Tell them I just threw up."
His uncle says from off-screen: "Oh, they know you threw up."
We sent some of these clips to the NSPCC.
A spokesman for the children's charity said: “It’s unacceptable if children are being exploited for likes and shares on YouTube, and we are not surprised that people are disturbed by what these videos appear to show.
"We would urge anyone concerned about a child in these videos to report it to YouTube rather than comment or share, and we would expect YouTube to act urgently to remove videos where children are being harmed.”
A spokesperson for YouTube said: "We take child safety extremely seriously and have clear policies against child endangerment.
"We recently tightened the enforcement of these policies to tackle content featuring minors where we receive signals that cause concern.
"It’s not always clear that the uploader of the content intends to break our rules, but we may still remove their videos to help protect viewers, uploaders and children.
"We will be conducting a broader review of associated content in conjunction with expert Trusted Flaggers."
