OBS Studio is one of the most popular broadcasting programs available. It is free and open-source, allowing you to add plugins to increase its functionality and meet your streaming needs. With so many options available, it can be a little overwhelming knowing which plugins to choose when you are initially setting things up.
We looked at dozens of plugins in preparation for this post and have come up with a list of 7 unique options that you should consider for your channel.
The design of your stream is one of the most important aspects of your channel. Most of the time, your graphics can be seen as part of your thumbnail when people are looking for a streamer to watch. Fortunately, OWN3D has created a plugin that provides all the bare essentials you need to brand your channel.
Created for OBS studio, the OWN3D Pro plugin gives you access to more than 575 overlay and alert designs to help you make your channel shine. Feel free to experiment with designs as often as you like to keep things fresh or match your content. Additionally, the plugin comes with the following benefits:
You don’t have to worry about setting up each element of a design. Instead, all you have to do is scroll through your options and pick the one you like best.
Celebrating your community engagement has never been easier. Place the plugin’s preset stream labels in a place where they can clearly be seen by your viewers, inspiring more donations and excitement.
Create commands, set up moderation tools, post live announcements, and post alerts in your chat. This tool will make managing your chat simple and easy.
Want to show your chat on your screen while you stream? OWN3D Pro allows you to embed your chat into OBS so that it can be saved.
With over 2,000 reviews, the OWN3D Pro Plugin is a high-rated asset to anyone who is using OBS and wants to have different options on the appearance of their stream.
Every streamer knows that there are many things you need to track while you are live. The OBS.Live Plugin by StreamElements was developed to customize how your OBS looks so that you can see everything you need while broadcasting.
The plugin makes it easy for you to track many aspects of your stream and you can drag and drop each feature to the best setup for you. A few of the features that the plugin offers are as follows:
You can integrate your chat from Twitch, YouTube, or Facebook Gaming (or all three) so that you can easily see it on OBS without having to open Twitch.
Not only will OBS.Live keep track of your alerts, you can also check the plugin to ensure that donations are real when they are sent in chat. You will also be given the options to replay, skip, or mute the alerts.
Easily keep track of the number of viewers watching your stream.
If you use the StreamElement chatbot, you will be able to give it a custom name with this plugin.
The OBS.Live plugin is great for streams where you can’t always keep an eye on your chat through Twitch or have it overlayed onto your stream.
The StreamFX plugin by Xaymar offers several visual effects that can be added to your stream. They offer new filters, sources, and transitions that will allow you to mask things you don’t want your viewers to see or manipulate one of your sources to appear that it is in a 3D space. Here are a few of the features that the plugin has to offer:
You can use the displacement mapping feature to move the pixels in several different ways.
The blur feature is one of the most popular features of the plugin. It allows streamers to use different blurring styles to mask out features of images or videos that may break ToS or that are not right for your community.
The plugin offers several color grading options that allow you to make your stream look unique.
This feature will allow you to modify how some of your sources appear without affecting the original source. You can create multiple mirrors at the same time.
Many OBS users consider the StreamFX plugin one of the most essential aspects of their stream’s setup.
The audio quality of your stream is more important than any other aspect. While some viewers will watch a stream at low-resolution or one with no webcam, most will not stay if you have issues with your audio.
Fortunately, the VST Plugin is perfect for improving your audio quality overall. It comes with several control features (such as compression, microphone EQ, and control background noise).
If you don’t have an Elgato Stream Deck, but you want to take advantage of similar functionality, look into the OBS Websocket . This simple plugin allows your OBS to communicate with a third-party program to change your scenes, activate transitions, and more. You will be able to use OBS Websocket with one of the following programs:
Touch Portal works with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS and connects with several different streaming apps.
Deckboard is a superior app that will connect Platforms and apps seamlessly, giving many options on how to control your stream graphics.
If you want to use your mobile device as a webcam or use a dual PC streaming setup, you generally need to purchase a capture card. The OSD NDI plugin , however, allows you to get around that by providing audio/video input using your local network.
While many users report that there can be some lag or quality issues, the plugin is perfect for novice streamers or those who occasionally stream with their phones around the home. This is made possible through the NewTek NDI technology.
Many streamers overlook the importance of closed captioning on Twitch, especially if they have never had to use it themselves. In fact, many viewers are hard of hearing or would prefer to keep the stream muted to not disturb those around them.
The Closed Captioning OBS Plugin was created by a GitHub user who goes by the name Ratwithacompiler. It uses the Google Cloud Speech Recognition API to integrate a CC button onto your steam.
Not only will the plugin work for both live-streams and VODs, but you can also have it replace certain words with others. That way, everyone reading closed captioning will see every F-bomb turn into the word “fluffy.”

OBS Open Broadcaster Software

The Best OBS Plugins

The core OBS Studio application features a robust API that developers use to create plugins to extend the functionality of OBS. Plugins can be found to do everything from instant replay to automatic scene switching making OBS as powerful as many paid video production software suites. Plugins for OBS can be found in the resources section of the OBS Forum page ( https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/ ). In order to download a plug-in you will generally be directed to GitHub because all OBS plugins must be open source. Github is a social source code-sharing website that allows software developers to interact and share their work. By default, OBS plugins on the website are sorted by their last update. You may find it more useful to filter the 120+ OBS Studio plugins by “ most downloaded ” or “ best rated ” to find the most reliable and useful plugins.
Pro Tip : All the plugins in this book are outlined on GitHub with download links at https://github.com/streamgeeks .
OBS Plugins can be sorted with Filters in the Forums page.
After sorting through dozens of OBS Studio plugins, the following list has been compiled of the top plugins for OBS. Each plugin in this list will be reviewed in greater detail in an upcoming chapter.
Each of these plugins will help you gain new capabilities inside of OBS. The process of installing a plugin into OBS is very straightforward. All you need to do is copy and paste the plug-in files that you download directly into the plugins folder for OBS on your computer. The OBS plugin folders can be found in the locations below.
32-bit plugins folder = C:\Program Files (x86)\OBS\plugins
64-bit plugins folder = C:\Program Files\OBS\plugins
Applications/OBS.app/Contents/Plugins
Here are the steps you can follow to install any OBS plugin.
Once you have completed the steps above, the plugin you have installed should become available inside of OBS. It’s really that simple. Some plugins make installation even simpler with an installation wizard that handles this process for you. The following chapters will outline each plug-in on the list and the capabilities they add to OBS. You can pick and choose which plugins will add value to your production and watch the online tutorial videos available in the Udemy course with this book to see how they work. In some cases, plugins can be used together to create new functionality the developers didn’t intentionally plan out. So enjoy each plug-in overview and keep an open mind to the abilities each adds while you think about the overall functionality of OBS.

Video source plugin (OBS Classic only)

Thread starter

This is a very, very un-alpha video source plugin. (Similar to what the FFMPEG plugin was trying to achieve)

VSP 32bit: http://catchexception.org/plugins/vsp/V ... C2X-x86.7z
VSP 64bit: http://catchexception.org/plugins/vsp/V ... C2X-x64.7z

Added video filter settings for contrast, brightness and gamma.

Thanks to Tyrrr for adding...

Re: Video source plugin (1.0-2-g7a4b44b 2013/6/6)

May want to note to users that the sound for seems to output to the desktop in order to be captured, and does not play out directly to stream.

Other than that, seems to work fine.

EDIT: seems this was fixed
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-2-g7a4b44b 2013/6/6)

Hey, looks good so far.
With one of my test videos OBS crashed when I increased the video size while having the preview active. (MP4 file) On another test AVI I couldnt reproduce this. Performance looks very good. Preview with deactivated encoding only uses about 20% cpu, similar to playing the file in MPC.
I actually dont even need a start stop functionality, though a loop function would be great. With that in mind I also noticed, adding the Video as a global source makes it play as soon as it got loaded and switching scenes doesnt stop it from playing. On the other hand without a global source, if you switch scenes it restarts the video. (I guess the global source behavior is normal, but maybe you can add an "option" to remember last playback position on switching scenes or something)
By the way, could you give us some info on what video files are best to be used, or are they encoded with local codecs, so all vfw ones work? Something like that :)

Thanks for your work!
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-2-g7a4b44b 2013/6/6)

I actually fixed the bug you discovered (I believe)

The three features I've completed but have not yet released:
Output audio directly to stream
Maintain aspect ratio and stretching
Hardware based scaling

Essentially if it runs in VLC it *should* run in this.

I have not yet enabled connecting directly to streams (rtp, etc.)

I'll be adding a playlist, and all features you'd except (loop, etc.)

The global source.. that is sort-of how I would expect it to work. Having it pause on scene changes would mean it acted differently than all other sources. I'll think about it

You're a hero.
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-4-g2572e46 2013/6/7)

If you discover any crashes please let me know the file (and if possible send it to me) as well as the circumstances that led up to the crash.
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-4-g2572e46 2013/6/7)

Did some quick testing. Worked great! Really love that you are doing this. Awesome work!

Can't wait for the loop and other features!

Thanks for doing this.
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-4-g2572e46 2013/6/7)

Extremely nice stuff you've got there. Thank you so much for your efforts (=
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-6-g9744ceb 2013/6/8)

I assume this is using ffmpeg? Can people use this to add RTMP streams to their scenes?

Re: Video source plugin (1.0-6-g9744ceb 2013/6/8)

Haha...I didn't see the "rtp" (I guess my eyes were looking for rtmp, or RTMP in all caps).
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-6-g9744ceb 2013/6/8)

The browser plugin can handle rtmp :]

Re: Video source plugin (1.0-6-g9744ceb 2013/6/8)

Hey, just discovered this (ty to Jack0r for showing me btw :)).

Would there be the possibilty to browse for videos, like clicking on a button and searching the popup for the video?
Cause I have troubles referring to the video path file.
For example, how should the path be, if the video called 'test 123' is located in a 'streamcheck42' folder on my desktop!

If this works, you probably made my day, no my week!
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-6-g9744ceb 2013/6/8)

Thank you so much, both of you!
This is truely awesome and I've been waiting for this many months - now it's no problem to display Ads or Openings for certain tournaments, I'm thankful!

Added the playlist
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-10-g2fcb6ac 2013/6/9)

Very good
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-13-g7ffaa3d 2013/6/10)

When I set a video to loop, it has a .2 second flash of black when it has to "reload" the video. I just wanted to see if there was any way to improve upon this. I'd like to be able to make a ~10 second video that just loops infinitely, but can't do that if it flashes.

Thanks! Plugin works great thus far except for the flashing on loop.
Re: Video source plugin (1.0-13-g7ffaa3d 2013/6/10)

Short answer is yes, I can fix it.

Long answer is that to fix it for both looped and unlooped with take a bit longer. I'll look into that as it bugs me as well.
