Basketball player Isaac Humphries just came out as a gay man in an emotionally raw video in which he shared his story with his teammates at Melbourne United. Describing it as "one of the hardest conversations I've ever had in my life," Humphries—who played in the NBA in the 2018 season—opened up about how he struggled with his mental health before finally arriving at a place of self-acceptance.
"A few years ago I fell into a very dark place, a very lonely place, I couldn't be who I am, and I attempted to take my life," he said. "And the main reason behind me becoming so low and hitting that point is because I was very much struggling with my sexuality and coming to terms with the fact that I am gay."
"I hated it about about myself, I was disgusted at myself," he continued. "I thought that I could not be that person within that environment, within a basketball environment, and it wasn't until I was in a community that's full of pride and happiness and joy, and it was a big wakeup call for me, but then came the big question mark of how do I be a basketball player, and how do I join a new term, when I've finally come to terms with this about myself, and I don't want to hide any more."
Humphries went on to say he is now committed to living openly and authentically, in the hopes that being visible as a gay man in his sport will help others who might be struggling with their own identity, and provide an example that things can get better.
"I decided that if I'm going to join a team, that I'm going to come out publicly, and just make sure people know... that you can live," he said. "You don't have to hide just because you're an athlete... We as athletes, as professional athletes, have a responsibility to be examples for people. And the truth is there are so many people in other worlds who are struggling every single day, and don't know how to get up, don't know how to exist, and I know how that feels and I want to represent those people. That's my goal behind this, to make sure people know you can be whoever you want, no matter who you are or what you do. You can be 'Big Ice' and you can be gay, and still be a great basketball player and be gay... I just want to be myself."

An Iowa sex trafficking victim who killed her rapist will be in court Friday after she allegedly cut off the GPS tracking device she was required to wear and left a Des Moines women's center where she was serving probation.
Pieper Lewis, now 18, escaped from the Fresh Start Women's Center the morning of Nov. 4, according to a probation revocation document. Lewis was arrested on Nov. 8 and booked into the Polk County Jail. She was charged with escape, a serious misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison and a fine of $2,560.
Lewis killed Zachary Brooks, a 37-year-old father of three, in June 2020. She said Brooks had sexually assaulted her multiple times. She pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and willful injury . A 28-year-old man that Lewis has said trafficked and sexually abused her has not been charged in her case. Prosecutors acknowledged during her sentencing that she was trafficked.
A probation revocation hearing in her homicide case is scheduled at 9 a.m. at the Polk County Criminal Courts Building.
In September, Polk County Judge David M. Porter gave Lewis a deferred judgment and ordered her to spend five years on probation at the Fresh Start Women's Center in Des Moines. Lewis had faced up to 20 years in prison before her sentencing.
A probation revocation report asked for the deferred judgement to be revoked and for her original sentence to be imposed. Court documents do not delineate the terms of that original sentence.
Porter also ordered Lewis to pay $150,000 to Brooks' family because of a state law that requires people convicted of homicides to pay that sum in restitution to the families of the people they killed. A GoFundMe fundraiser to support Lewis raised more than $500,0000 to pay the $150,000 in restitution.
Leland Schipper, who taught freshman math to Lewis at Des Moines Lincoln High School, said in November that neither he nor Lewis has any access to that money, Schipper said. It remains, for now, with the GoFundMe organization.
