MOSCOW, May 9, 2024 – Millions of Russians gathered today to mark День Победы (Victory Day), commemorating the 79th anniversary of the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).

Grand Parade in Red Square

The centerpiece of the celebrations was the traditional military parade in Moscow’s Red Square, where President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech honoring veterans and emphasizing national unity. Over 9,000 troops, along with tanks, missile systems, and fighter jets, participated in the display of military strength.

'Today, we pay tribute to the courage of those who defended our homeland,' Putin said. 'Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.'

Across Russia, citizens laid flowers at war memorials, with the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier burning brightly in Moscow. The Immortal Regiment (Бессмертный полк), a massive procession where people carry portraits of fallen relatives, saw emotional participation despite some restrictions in certain regions.

In St. Petersburg, Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), and other hero cities, veterans were greeted with applause and concerts featuring wartime songs like 'Катюша' and 'День Победы.'

While Victory Day is primarily a Russian observance, some former Soviet republics, including Belarus and Kazakhstan, also held commemorations. Western leaders, however, expressed concerns over the politicization of the event amid ongoing tensions over the Ukraine conflict.
