Why trust us?

Earlier this summer, a woman's butt plug got stuck inside of her when her partner pushed it up too far, and she needed an hour-long operation to get it removed. Ouch. But let's be real: She's hardly the first (or last) woman to do something she shouldn't with a sex toy.
We only want the best for you, so have fun with that vibrator, but take care, please. To help you stay safe while getting off, we tapped doctors to give us the scoop on the things you should never do with your vibrator.
You really need to get one specifically designed for anal play—they're typically smaller. “Your anus is not made for this, so there’s certainly always a concern that there can be problems with tearing and fecal incontinence,” says Lauren Streicher, M.D., author of Sex Rx . Plus, there’s the risk (like that young woman we just told you about) of it getting stuck up there. “There has been more than one trip to the ER to retrieve something up the rectum,” she says. Use “lots and lots” of lube and opt for smaller vibrators made for the derriere, like vibrating butt plugs . Look for a flared base so it doesn't get stuck (a butt plug typically has this, but make sure!). When it comes to vibrators, go for those labeled for anal (they typically have that flared base), and pick a smaller size than you'd normally use for your vagina.
It’s the same reason why you were taught to wipe from front to back —you don’t want to introduce any bacteria into your vagina where it can increase your risk for a vaginal infection. If you have one vibrator that you use for both areas, use it in your vagina first.
There’s a common fear that you can overuse a vibrator to the point where you can’t orgasm any other way, but DePree says there’s no conclusive research evidence that this actually happens. Still, “some women will report needing higher and higher intensity and longer to achieve orgasm over prolonged use,” she says. Eventually it can be a mental barrier if you wonder why it takes you “forever” to orgasm with a partner. So if that’s you, you can always take some time away from your favorite toy to experiment with other forms of stimulation, DePree recommends. (Or, you know, just ask your partner if your go-to toy can join in.)
This one falls into the category of "harmful for your vibrator," but you both have to be in good health, right? Streicher explains that most vibrators today are made of silicone, which is great, but if you use a silicone-based lube with a silicone vibrator, “it makes the material loose and bubbly,” she says. Basically, you destroy your fine friend. Two options: one is to use a water-based lube (like this one from the Women's Health Boutique). If that doesn’t give you enough slipperiness, go for your favorite silicone formula, but put a condom over the vibrator. There’s benefits to this anyway because it keeps the toy nice and clean.
Taking your vibrator on vacay? Good for you! Now when you stash it in your suitcase, take it apart, warns Streicher. “You don’t want your vibrator going off in your suitcase, that’s a sure trip to TSA hell,” she says.
Seriously! No matter how many settings your vibrator has, if it feels good you generally don’t have to worry that you’re harming yourself (i.e. burning your clitoris off, for instance). And it won’t get stuck up there either. “The vagina is what we call a ‘blind pouch,’ so it isn’t going anywhere,” says DePree.
The final word: “If it doesn’t hurt and it’s pleasurable, you won’t do harm with a vibrator [in or outside of your vagina],” says Streicher. Have at it, and most of all, have fun.
