So is it really all that hard out there for a pimp? Late in the powerful documentary Very Young Girls , Rachel Lloyd, a former prostitute and founder of a NYC non-profit that helps young streetwalkers regain control of their lives, receives an award for her efforts shortly after Three 6 Mafia collected an Academy Award for Best Song for Hustle & Flow . It's a sobering moment: The Three 6 Mafia song (and the movie it represents) seems harmless enough, but that harmlessness points to a softened public perception of pimps that doesn't jibe with the real deal. And that's one of the many obstacles Lloyd has to face as she tries to wrest these damaged girls not just from their pimps, but also from a justice system and a culture that's rigged against them.
Why is Lloyd's scrappy little organization the only voice speaking for these girls? This documentary doesn't get around to that question, and though its narrow focus is disappointing, its moving testimonials from underage prostitutes are enough to rattle the conscience. The film opens with the startling fact that the average age of girls entering the commercial sex industry in New York is 13, then proceeds to show the cruel logic of it. Most of the subjects in Very Young Girls come from broken homes, and pimps are expert at preying on their vulnerability, whether that means playing their lover or father, getting them addicted to drugs, or simply beating them into submission.
Along with straightforward interviews with former prostitutes on the mend, Schisgall weaves in startling home-video footage from two pimps who imagined their exploits might be used as fodder for a reality television show. While their fantasies of TV stardom are hilariously misguided, they're scarily assured in the art of manipulating the bruised psyches of the 100 or so girls under their employ. Seeing Lloyd and her tiny organization GEMS (Girls Educational & Mentoring Services) attempt to compete for hearts and minds is a tragic David and Goliath match-up. And with so few resources at their disposal, they can only claim small victories in a much larger war.

So a filthy pimp picks a 14 year old girl up off the street to be gang raped and gets sent to some half-assed class where ‘no moral judgements’ are made against he and the other sickos and they all sit there laughing. The little girl gets tried as an adult even though in any other circumstance it would have been classed as rape. Where is the logic in that?? Why do I get the feeling that if it was a white middle class girl there would be hell to pay and a black man with a life sentence?? America needs to stop pretending it has any moral superiority when its justice system is so blatantly racist and ridiculous. Unbelievable.

when i click download or play i’m redirected to reelHD where I had to create an account to view, which I did. however, when i search for the documentary on that site, it’s not available. how can i watch this?
This documentary made me want to pull out all my hair. Has common sense died?? I mean really… who in their right mind prosecutes a CHILD for prostitution?! It’s not like normal children are out there selling themselves for the hell of it. Prostitution is not like playing with matches! And that poor mother searching for her girl. What is wrong here… If a little white girl went missing from a suburbs you better bet there’d be a huge swath of people on the ground looking for them… not one desperate mother pleading for tips, then bringing it to police only to have them say its not their problem… That police officer should be fired on spot.
There are not enough GEMS out there, but I completely respect them for what they’re doing. Taking the logical, common sense, humane response to a bad situation. Keep up the good work. You people are amazing.
I agree with you completely. Why are people of colour treated so badly in the States? Why aren’t the police doing anything about the pimps? I was so happy to see the two pimps (Dumb and Dumber) got locked up. I hope they are forced to become somebody’s bitch. I hope they suffer every day like those poor little girls did. I’ll never forget Ebony and wonder what will happen to her. I thought this documentary was very well done and wish more people would watch it.

i know that pimps do everything they can to target vulnerable girls but what is with these terrible disgusting parents? my family and i lived in some of the most dangerous places in the US but my mom and dad always made sure i was safe and did everything in their power to protect me even when they were balancing 2 or 3 jobs and raising a family at the same time… i really felt so terribly for some of those girls that after going through something so terrible and horrific, the people who should always be on their side and should always support and love them no matter what betray them so badly. glad for GEMS

I didn’t realise that USA practiced like Calcutta; the abused is penalised by the legal system; it’s crazy to allow adults in law to punish children for being kidnapped and raped. Thanks to pornography, many men don’t draw any lines between a child and a woman. Pimps should be shot on sight.

has absolutely nothing to do with a person’s inability to distinguish between
someone that is below the legal age, and one that is not. I cannot imagine how
you even managed to draw a line between those two dots. I think that it would
be fair to say, that only men who are interested in underage girls, would even
be aroused by someone below a certain age – the key here being, if they are aroused
by young girls then porn or no porn, they will seek what they desire – the one
saving grace here may be that if they are attracted to young girls, perhaps
(and I am not suggesting this is acceptable, it is just not as unacceptable as
the alternative) access to that kind of porn may stop them from going out and committing
a far more heinous act than ogling a pawing over a computer screen…I may be completely incorrect about these points, but to blame this entirely on porn, seems very simple-minded…
Really GrimTruth…………did you really say that. So let me see if I have this correct……you believe that you can stop the sexual abuse of young children by sexually abusing young children( as in making child porn). That has to be the stupidest statement i have ever heard….ever!!
Also – making child porn… or ANY porn, requires someone to be taken advantage of. Because this may ‘stop’ some men going out and targeting children, is this fair to put the burden on them? Similar to the idea that men are so lustful as to be unable so not rape, so the burden is on women to not be out alone, not dress ‘provocatively’, not drink to excess…… time to step up

Porn is a factor in maltreatment of children and women alike, without doubt. Studies have shown that orgasm is one of the strongest reinforcements to behavior – but also one which wears out without further stimulation. This means that what people watch in pornography (even if at first they may be slightly uncomfortable) is reinforced as arousing in the brain, leading onward from there.
Really does beg the question, how much of the burden should women and children have to bear for the sake of some peoples sexual kicks? The same with prostitution.

I’m glad that there was some glimmer of positive growth from that. I hope organizations like GEMS keep doing good work, and get all the funding they need. There is so much wrong with a system that imprisons underage girls (or arguably, any prostitute). This was a thought provoking documentary, very honest.
