PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Police in Rhode Island say DNA evidence and the use of forensic genealogy has led to an arrest in a 35-year-old sexual assault case.
Authorities say 66-year-old Frank Thies was arrested last month in Indiana and faces charges of sexual assault and molestation.
The victims were aged 11 and 13 in 1987 when they were assaulted after being forced into the woods at knifepoint.
Physical evidence tied to the attacker was recovered, but it wasn't until recent developments in genetic forensics that investigators could identify a suspect and make an arrest.
Thies was arraigned Thursday in Rhode Island after being extradited from Indiana.

Alito will have to find a new hobby.
Lost in all the midterm post-mortems and crypto implosion schadenfreude is a historic vote that took place in the newly lame duck Senate. This week the Senate voted to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that goes a long way toward codifying same-sex marriage on a federal level, effectively telling the various Heritage Foundation flunkies on the Roberts court to keep their grubby mitts off. Cool, now do abortion rights.
The Dobbs decision, a poorly reasoned, mean-spirited opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito with all the charm of canker sore, finally motivated Dems and the few Republicans yet to renounce their humanity to codify same-sex marriage into law. The act stops short of forcing individual states to issue same-sex marriage licenses but it does require all states to recognize same-sex marriages from all states where its legal. It also recognizes the marriages on a federal level for the purposes of programs like social security and medicare.
Post midterm Dems wasted no time in bringing the bill to a vote. No time like the present especially when Clarence Thomas drew a bright red target around Obergefell v. Hodges, the case that cleared the way for same-sex marriage, in his concurring opinion on Dobbs. The court has been telling us who they are and the Democratic leadership finally decided to believe them. This vote moves the bill to the floor for a final vote after which it can be sent to the house, which passed a version this summer, to be amended.

Give Light and the People Will Find Their Own Way
SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Tuesday said it would support a compromise version of a federal bill that codifies same-sex marriage, so long as religious freedom protections are ensured in amendments.
"The doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints related to marriage between a man and a woman is well known and will remain unchanged. We are grateful for the continuing efforts of those who work to ensure the Respect for Marriage Act includes appropriate religious freedom protections while respecting the law and preserving the rights of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters," the Church said in a statement. "We believe this approach is the way forward. As we work together to preserve the principles and practices of religious freedom together with the rights of LGBTQ individuals much can be accomplished to heal relationships and foster greater understanding."
The bill is the subject of negotiations in the Senate and is likely to come up for a vote this week. Sen. Mitt Romney has been involved in the negotiations for religious freedom and previously told FOX 13 News a compromise is in the works .
“There’s something special in being alive in a time when such a significant thing is happening,” said David Shill, a BYU student and part of the Cougar Pride Center’s Board of Directors.
“I’m like, gagged,” he said. “I would have never thought 10 years ago that the Church would ever, ever support the legalization of same-sex marriage.”
Shill said he has “high hopes” there will be more tolerance on campus.
“It’s a small but significant change in a cultural attitude towards queer people within the Church,” he said.
“It’s been a long road for the LDS faith and for Utahns, more generally,” said State Senator Derek Kitchen. “It’s an exciting day to see that the LDS Church has evolved.”
Kitchen is currently Utah’s only openly-LGBTQ+ legislator. He sued the state back in 2013 over marriage equality.
“The first federal lawsuit in the country to legalize same-sex marriage and declare that all people have the right to be protected under the law,” he explained.
The state senator said the Church’s announcement is something to celebrate, but still said there’s “a lot more progress to be made.”
“At the end of the day, no matter what they believe, all Americans deserve to be protected under the law,” said Kitchen. “So this is the right thing to do no matter what.”
"We are heartened to see the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints support the bi-partisan Respect for Marriage Act, which will codify protections for same-sex and interracial marriages. Despite differences we may have, we can always discover common ground on laws that support the strengthening of all families. We are thrilled to see a broad coalition of parties and faiths recognize that every American has a fundamental right to marry, regardless of race or sex," said Troy Williams, the director of the LGBTQ rights group Equality Utah.

BEREA, Ohio -- An Edgewood Drive woman called police Nov. 15 and said that a snowplow driver she had hired was harassing her.
In October, the woman paid the man and his Berea company $500 -- an amount that he had quoted her -- to plow her driveway throughout the winter.
Several days later, the man contacted the woman and said she owed him an additional $50 in tax. He went to her home, where the woman paid him the $50.
The man then asked the woman to have sex with him. She ordered him off her property.
The woman later discovered that the man had stolen a broken lawnmower part from near her garage. Then he told her she owed him $40 for ordering a replacement part. She told the man she was confused because she had never asked him to repair her lawnmower, which a family member had already repaired.
The woman said she has refused to give the man more money, but he repeatedly has called her and driven to her home asking for payment. She also saw him try to turn the door handle to enter her home, but the door was locked.
The man told the woman he would not plow her driveway or refund her money unless she paid for the lawnmower part.
Police said they would try to contact the man. They encouraged her to call police if the man appeared at her home again.
