Why is Vernongate called Vernongate?

In the 13th century, a wealthy wool merchant family called the Verduns lived in Derby. They were responsible for building one of its most famous mansions, on what is now Vernongate.

The Verduns made their money selling wool to other countries and importing wine from France (the name "Verdun" comes from the French word meaning "green"). When they died out in 1335, their house fell into disrepair until it was purchased by another wealthy family named Eyre - who continued using part of it as an inn until 1617!
