The Rokeby Venus (/ ˈroʊkbi / ROHK-bee; also known as The Toilet of Venus, Venus at her Mirror, Venus and Cupid and, in Spanish, La Venus del espejo) is a painting by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age.
Here Velázquez has merged two traditional representations of the goddess - one of Venus 'at her toilet', where she is normally shown sitting upright on a bed, looking at herself in a mirror, and another of her reclining, usually in a landscape. The result here is an image of astonishing originality.

A good many questions concerning Rokeby Venus have been raised by art historians, whether Velázquez specialists or not. Why is Venus seen from behind? Why does the mirror reflect only the face of the model? Is this simple modesty? Or fear, on the part of the artist, of excommunication by the Church?
The Rokeby Venus is a mid-17th century painting by Diego Velázquez, commissioned for Spain's Royal Court. The artwork depicts the goddess Venus in a sensual pose, lying on a bed and looking into a mirror held by Cupid. This is the only surviving female nude by Velázquez and is considered one of his most celebrated works.
