The Scooby-Doo multimedia franchise has no shortage of variations, but the property will soon be getting its first adult spin-off. The new series, simply titled Velma , will focus on the origins of the titular Scooby-Doo character. Executive producer Mindy Kaling will portray the voice of Velma for the show. And, as you can see below, the first look at the series has been released.
The image shows that although there is still a comedic art style, the series itself won’t be afraid to show graphic bits of gore. Velma Dinkley also has a new design for the series which should be an interesting change to the character.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any further plot details regarding the series at this time. Hopefully we’ll have more information in the near future. As for now, though, it’s clear that the series will be taking great liberties with the original Scooby-Doo source material. And considering that it will be geared towards adults with a reinvention of the titular character and the inclusion of graphic violence, this will be a version of the franchise never before seen on screen. With that said, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates on this project as we have them.
Previous voice actors that have portrayed the character include Nicole Jaffe, Pat Stevens, Marla Frumkin, Christina Lange, B.J. Ward, Mindy Cohn, Stephanie D’Abruzzo, Kate Micucci, Trisha Gum, Ariana Greenblatt, and Gina Rodriguez. While Linda Cardellini played the character for live-action in the original two theatrical Scooby-Doo films, Hayley Kiyoko played her in Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins and its sequel Scooby-Doo: Curse of the Lake Monster . Sarah Gilman played her in the straight-to-video film Daphne & Velma .
Aside from the aforementioned Mindy Kaling, the voice cast for the series also includes Sam Richardson. In addition to Kaling, the show’s executive producers feature Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein and Sam Register. The series is being produced by Warner Bros Animation. It currently has a 10-episode order for its first season scheduled to premiere on HBO Max.

Velma Dinkley is a fictional character in the Scooby-Doo franchise. She is usually seen wearing a baggy orange turtleneck, short red pleated skirt (or in later episodes an A-line skirt, or sometimes shorts), knee socks, Mary Janes, and most prominently, a pair of square glasses, which she frequently loses. She is seen as the brains of the group.
