Ex-Edmond de Rothschild Group CEO Francois Pauly has been tapped by the Vatican to manage the Institute for Works of Religion – the city state’s asset manager (think Godfather Part III’s Internazionale Immobiliare).

Responsible for managing the Catholic Church’s vast assets and property, financial services (current accounts, currency exchange, payments), profit allocation and regulatory compliance, the Institute is one of the most powerful and secretive asset managers in the world.

Pauly is expected to take over as president of the Institute on April 28, heading up a seven-member panel supervising its strategic direction. He’s been on the board since 2024.

The Daily Mail highlighted Pauly’s imminent promotion with an odd headline asking whether it signals that the “deep state [is] taking over the Catholic Church.”

Here, the ‘always has been’ meme seems apt.

In 1832, after the Napoleonic wars severely strained the Vatican’s finances and nearly caused the collapse of the Papal States’ economy, the Rothschilds provided Pope Gregory XVI with a generous, £400k loan (equivalent to up to ~£500M today). With that, some observers theorize that the Vatican, and by extension the Catholic Church, became beholden to the Rothschilds.

Carl Mayer von Rothschild’s meeting with Gregory, and the fact that he was not required to perform the customary act of kissing the Pope’s foot, was seen as proof of this new relationship. For everyone else, the Vatican didn’t abolish the practice until the 1960s.

️ The Vatican Bank itself was founded in June 1942 by Pope Pius XII, at the height of Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship and Nazi Germany’s expansion across Europe. The Vatican enjoyed a cordial relationship with Mussolini, blessing his leadership in 1929, and signed a treaty with the Nazis in 1933 to protect Church rights and property. Some of Church leaders blessed the Axis’s campaigns, particularly the war against the USSR.

🪖 Edmund de Rothschild served in the British Army in Italy in WWII, and got stationed near the Vatican after the liberation of Rome in 1944, and reportedly met Pius XII.
