The only women on the beach are foreigners…clad in bikinis… A number of Indian young men who frolic in the waves…with smiles of pleasure. One particular young man was being dragged by two others pulling each of his legs over the wet sand. Shouts of protest were emitted as he struggled against his tormentors. When his mates dropped him into the surf, he picked up a clump of sand hurling it at his quickly departing mates. They talked of their arranged marriages and how one returned home from England because his father, told him to come home because he had picked out a wife for him and he needed to arrange suitable marriages for his sisters. The occassional teenage girl accompanied by her father and mother wearing a sari , her brother, dressed in shirt and shorts are seen walking along the shore of the most beautiful shoreline with wonderful waves just begging for surfers or at least boogie boarders. The girl takes playful dance steps into the waves…jumping back when they tease her long skirt. Martina and Armin needed money so we needed to find an ATM as well. Martina and I were looking across the road and we thought we spotted a few shops that might provide the answers. The first one, no luck…only saris and pant suits. Off we went. Oscar, Martina, Armin. When we got to the second floor, three young women clad in matching saris, the uniform of the store? Armin and Martina said that they would wait outside, and I told Oscar that I could manage on my own…. It had the flavour of being shown pornographic magazines kept behind the counter so the kids could not get at them. She had to open each cellophane bag to see what was inside each. The selection was very limited. Many of the maillots had legs on them that were mid thigh and the sizes were random, the fabric was at best limited elastic and at the worst…without any stretch. I told them I did indeed swim and that I spent much time in a pool actually swimming…gesturing the crawl stroke complete with breathing. They were quite taken by this drama and were unsure what I was telling them. Off I went to pay…at the entrance to the store. The woman brought the swim suit dicreetly wrapped in a brown paper bag which was then given to the men at the counter who put it into a plastic bag and I paid the rupees. By the way, it is black with hot pink stripes over the bodice, matching the cup I bought in Mumbai! Hi Maureen, you make me feel guilty with all my suits. I wish I could send you a few. Edmonton is having a bit of a cold spell for a few days…but no complaining. Its only the 3rd time we experienced winter so far.
