I have had it for just over one year, and it has not used a drop. I have just been on a tour of Scotland and I checked the oil level before I left. After two days we had covered miles at high speed mph , long stints but with plenty of stops. I checked the oil, and it had gone fom just over mid-way, to just below the minimum mark! I used a lesser amount of oil on the mile return journey. I cannot find any evidence of a leak, and my colleagues tell me my exhaust was clear no blue clouds. Is there any crank case ventilation mechanism, and could it be this? Is this usual? Should I start saving up for piston rings, valve seals? I have topped up the oil level and will monitor very carefully until confident all is ok. Regards Admiral. Re: Oil Usage. Interesting question - many modern engines see oil as a consumable! What does everyone else experience? If in doubt buy a compression tester or get someone to check the compression for you. Just recently got back from doing a mile trip incorporating the Oop North Run, model with 20k miles on the clock. Oil level hasn't budged checked before departure and on return. Apart from regular oil changes at service times, I haven't had to top my Vara's oil up at all. Let us know how you get on. Never let a motorcycle take you somewhere your brain didn't go five seconds earlier. Redeye Guest Logged. I have had it for just over one year, and it has not used a drop.? Regards Admiral Not a BM in disguise is it?? I have previously had two 2. Vauxhall state that miles per litre is acceptable oil consumpsion. Should've checked that it hadn't got a flat-twin in there somewhere. On the Vara i've never put in a drop of oil in 15, miles. Memo to self Another thing Honda's are on an 8, oil change interval. OK so the dealer makes a bit extra. Is the fekker going to blow up? Doubt it. Considering that Honda don't want to replace a few thousand engines every year they must be confident that the engine will run quite happily for 8K or even more. Consider also the quality of modern oils compared to the lard we used in the good ol' days and I can't see the point of changing the oil more frequently than required, even given the increase in performance of modern engines. Or do we suppose we know more about lube and engines than Honda? Or do we suppose we know more about lube and engines than Honda?? HOC No:- Retired. What is the forum coming to?? Chill everyone, I was just havin' a larf. Note to all, Red's bike is a good bike and is a bargain, rush to buy it and it's well taken care of! My Vara is a W with 13k now on the clock. I have done 3k of that in the last 3 months and the oil, which I check every time before setting off, yes indeed, has not dropped at all. Regards Admiral Dear friend Varas are not consuming any oil due to engine malfunction what so ever, for your info mine ex Vara mod of like yours with more that k in odo NEVER consumed a gram of oil!!!!! Possible causes for your case are: 1- wrong counting, bike must be with the two wheels on straight ground and not on the central stand 2- grankase breather tube glogged, rare but it happens sometime and 3- the type of oil and its viscosity you used most propably , although it sounds stupid it is absolutely truth!!! I generally used to ''taste'' different type of oils always semi synthetics or full synthetics viscosity of15W Castrol, Motul, Bel-ray e. Then I changed to other manufacturers as mentioned above and I had no consuption at all!! Another tip is that if you use viscocities like 0w 50 or 5w 50 then the consuption will be increased even more!!! For Vara an oil semi synthetic or full synthetic of 10w or 15w 40 will dissappear the consuption avoiding of course the types that you previously used castrol and you will see the difference. A vHonda never brake down or give problems related to oil consuption worned rings, worn valve seal or valve stems e. Thanks for all the replies. I intend to monitor the oil level very closely, and may change to another type of oil at the next service. Honeymonster, what oil did you have in your Vara on your mile trip? I think the firestorm engines also do it as well, so it is engine specific. However and this is annoying certain engines burn oil and others don't. It really depends on how Montessa put the beast together, and how the machine was run in etc etc. On the Vara, it seems that oil levels are more important than on other bikes. As the issues of shared oil for gearbox etc, you will find that if you levels get low, then the gearbox will also start acting oddly as well. When I questioned Honda over the oil consumption, they said I should only start worrying IF the bike used more than 0. My bike started using a little oil recently, but that stopped because I found that it was chucking it out of the filler. This was caused by the crank breather being blocked yes, that miriad of pipes at the bottom of the bike. Go Up Pages 1. User actions.
