I'm thinking about traveling there for a quick trip. Anyone visit recently? I have three of my friends that were there in three different resorts in Cuba. My advice: do not go to Cuba! Waste of money. Just returned from Varadero, but have never been there previously been to other parts of Cuba , so no baseline to compare. Overall, the food is on par with other resorts that we have visited previously, not better, not worse. The locals are there, more so on the weekend, but would not say it is a major issue. I was in Cayo Coco in December, there were locals at the resort and frankly they were far better behaved than the tourists. There were no obvious shortages, but that was my first time in Cuba so I have nothing to compare it to. In Havana the rates are higher , from what I was told. No personal experience w EUR, but I have never heard of the locals preferring one currency over another. The most relevant part, it appears, is to find a guy who offers a better rate. I keep hearing its fine to exchange your CAD for the peso, but I'm also hearing that the Euro can get you more bang for your buck there. Cuba recently changed their currency so there wasn't any real need for pesos either. They know their exchange rates, so make sure you know them as well. If you want bang for your bucks, then land there. Wait to see your local rep the next day sunwing or whatever. Then tell him you want to exchange local pesos. The official rate is like 20 or 25 or something, the locals will give you I mainly used the local pesos for tipping. If you stay 5 star you see less locals. If you stay 4 or 3 it's filled with locals and it definitely can make the experience worse. I've definitely dealt with rude locals in not knowing I should only do 5 star in Cuba. The beach there is one of the best I've ever seen. Highly recommend. One of the few places in the Carribean which aren't destroyed with sea weed. No shortage of liquor. So if you can bring a bunch of smaller denomination foreign currency for tipping - it helps them out quite a bit more than the equivalent peso. It is not so much the purchasing power, but the fact that they cannot get the coveted goods for local money; however, with foreign currency, there is a parallel system of stores, which would allow you to charge the foreign currency card and purchase some things that are not sold in regular stores.
