"The inspiring true story of Vanessa Steel, whose childhood was overshadowed by a terrible secret. Plagued by torture and abuse by both her mother and grandfather, little Vanessa was nearly destroyed until she developed a secret power of her own that ultimately saved her life. Vanessa was only two years old when her abuse started. It began with smacking, food punishments and lock-ins by her mother, her father a silent witness to Vanessa's torment. The punishments steadily intensified with beatings and torture, and on many nights Vanessa's mother forced her to sleep the pigsty in the garden, tied up like an animal. If this wasn't enough, Vanessa's grandfather began to sexually abuse her when she was six. It was here that mysterious faces and voices appeared to Vanessa in the dark, comforting her during those horrific ordeals. From then on these 'ghost people' talked to her every day, and tried to protect her with warnings. Then at eight years old, Vanessa found out that the 'mother' who plagued her life had adopted her as a baby and would never love her as her own. When Vanessa started foreseeing the future as a teenager, she plucked up the courage to tell her parents about her spirit friends. She was rewarded with repeated visits to doctors to 'put her right'. But her insights came too late to save her brother Nigel who was also tortured by their mother and was later to tragically die from his abuse. At sixteen, she met and married a man who seemed her salvation but Vanessa was once more trapped in an abusive and violent relationship -- this time with her husband. This is the story of how Vanessa fought back against her abusers and at last laid the horrors and demons of her own childhood to rest." -- Publisher's description.

I have never met another woman who understood what it felt like to have their own mother not love or want her. This book was hard to read, influenced a cry session, but above all, gave me a new outlook on the capabilities a survivor encompasses. This is a wonderful narrative that depicts the lack of child abuse policy in early generations, and reflects the ways in which modern society would have handled these allegations when compared. This was a requirement of my family violence course, but I feel a better woman for having read it.

I've read this book 2x now, and I still think it is an amazing memoir. I guess I have a strong stomach because it wasn't a difficult read for me. It was actually difficult for me to put the book down! I'm very happy that Steel was able to FINALLY have the life she deserves after everything she has been through, but I still can't understand how she can just move on with her life and still talk to those who abused her and let her down. I realize that in the time period this was set it, things like that would be shameful to talk about, but still...I have a difficult time accepting it. I read almost all of the terrible reviews and saw that most people seem to think something is wrong with her mentioning her psychic abilities...I'm not sure why though. One person even said she would never have bought the book if she had known. As a young child she was badly abused mentally and physically, so how is it surprising she speaks of instances where she has an out-of-body experience? I know I have had moments like that when I have fallen off of a horse or had something frightening happen, so it is perfectly plausible that she experienced the same thing, but more intense. I don't think there is anything wrong with her mentioning any of this, I feel it only adds to the story of her horror, making it seem as if her mother literally drove her insane (although, I don't think that was the case). I really enjoyed this book a great deal, but it bothers me that NO ONE really tried to help her get away even though they knew something was going on...perhaps if it were a different time, her childhood could have been salvaged. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone!

This was a good book, but I'm not sure I believe the story. It's been a while since I read it, so I can't say what made me not believe it. I do know that there seemed to be an awful lot of torture going on that could not have gone unnoticed, even if the abuser is a very good liar. I'm not saying the author is making it up, because I know from experience things can happen and no one notices or cares. I'm thinking maybe the author should be looking into a lawsuit for people not getting her out of the situation. Someone had to know what was happening to some extent and they should have done something. If I remember correctly the father in this story knew what was happening and chose to ignore it yet the daughter forgave him as though it was just a one time thing. I'm sorry but, something doesn't seem right about that. To me he was as bad as the mother if not worse. I'm not an expert on child abuse though so forgive me if I'm being rude. I do remember what it was that made me not believe it now. It was when the mother puts her in a bucket of ice cold water and then makes her sleep outside in below freezing weather. The child would have froze to death. At the very least would have suffered from hypothermia and frost bite. It was a good book though, it kept me reading.

This is one book I read through in a single day. It was terribly sad, but also terribly all too real. There are people in the world like Vanessa's evil step mother, and their victims all too often cover up the horror and dread they face each day, fearing an even greater punishment if they tell anyone. And worse, when they do break their silence, they are not believed by the very people who should protect them. I'm glad Vanessa found happiness at last, although she did take care of her insane step mother til the end and even facing death, this crazy evil woman would not give Vanessa the answers she sought. This book is a testament to the will of the human spirit to survive. I had to wonder, however, if the memories of foretelling the future weren't Vanessa's rewriting of her memory (not intentionally) and the zoning out in a daze sounded like disassociation to me - a precursor sometimes to multiple personalities. The visions and imaginary companions were a little schizophrenic. Not denying that premonitions and communication with spirits do exist, however, the human mind will conjure up whatever it has to to survive. It would be understandable, under the circumstances, if this is how she dealt with things, to keep her sanity (sort of). None of that matters, however, as this book is a great look inside the more dysfunctional of families (although I'd faint if I met a *functional* family.) I'm a RN who works with families in crisis when all the secrets and skeletons fall out of the closet and you have to wonder if these people are putting you on. Sadly they are not. This sort of thing does exist and happens more often than you'd think.

Afflicted by the Sins of our Fathers and Mothers....

First and foremost.... Vanessa, I am in total awe of you. Your harrowing memoir has left me completely dumbfounded, I have not been so dramatically moved since the publication of Dave Pelzer's, 'A Child Called It'. You write with such clarity, perception, candidness, understanding and acceptance. The uncountable forms of abuse that you were forced to endure were absolutely atrocious, inhumane, barbaric and for most beyond complete comprehension. As I am sure you are aware many victims of abuse lose their battle, fracturing in one way or another beyond repair. I cried many a tear whilst trying to empathise with and embody your thoughts, feelings and experiences. You are a prime example of how forgiveness in itself can heal and of the overwheming power of love. Emanating throughout this book is a beautiful, gifted, enlightened being and it has been a pleasure to have met you within this pages, however tragic the circumstances may have been. God bless you, Lisa.x Secondly... Excerpt, 'I said that you were only a child and that she shouldn't visit the sins of the Father on you'. It should read Father's! Thankfully Vanessa put an end to her family's historically repetitive violent and abusive pattern. But where, how and by who did it all sincerely begin? It seems that abuse has been afflicting this family for generations, with such shocking and horrific consequences. Excerpt, 'If my mother had made my childhood a torment, she herself had been constantly miserable and tormented. It was more than likely that her father subjected her to the kind of abuse he put me through-perhaps that was why she was not able to have children of her own. If what I suspected about her childhood and the difficulties in her marriage were true, then she had also suffered....Learning to give love is an even bigger gift than being able to receive it and for poor Muriel, it's a lesson she never learned. I loved her, but I realize now that she never knew what it felt like to love. She missed out on the most important thing in life.... Yes she did Vanessa, YOU! Punished is one of the most gut wrenching books I have ever read, certainly not for the faint hearted.

Without any doubt the best book I have ever read and some of this could have been my own life story. I was born in Worcester ten years after Vanessa and familiar with all the places she talked about and lived. I was also badly abused by my maternal grandfather from a very young age and found out as I grew older that I was sent to keep him company and believe he had abused my mother too when she was a child. As there were so many similarities this was obviously difficult to read but I found I felt very close to Vanessa despite never meeting her and will never forget this book.

Harrowing but rewarding true-life story

This was a brilliant true story, that shows how a child who suffers terribly at the hands of her mother (both mental and physical abuse) and at trhe hands of others who should have loved and cared.....nevertheless survived and turned out to be a loving and caring person. It was hard to read more than a few pages at a time to start with, because of what was described...but gradually the pace hotted up and in the end I couldn't put it down till I'd finished it. Finding out about this book made me realise how many titles there are of auto-biographies from other sufferers. It also made me realise that the mental torture meeted out by my mother was nothing compared to this. Really well written too!

What a book, ive never read anything quite like it, i read it in two days flat because i couldnt put it down. it was so sad, so shocking. I know abuse goes on but this was something else, i finished the last page and closed the book and thought "christ what have i just read?" recommended however, ive hugged and loved my children more than ever before after reading this.

Awe inspiring

How can a mother be so cruel? Answer? Easy when they have never known love! But as an adult-a mother knows right from wrong, but seldom change or openly have regrets, instead the abuse carries on,being passed Dow like a right of passage! This story is of a remarkable girl who fought through the worst kind of abuse, and in her own words is a survivor. I cried from the heart for this woman. I truly hope her children give her all the love and affection in the world. She truly deserves it. I also read this book in 6 hours,I could not put it down.

‘Punished’ is the inspiring true story of an unusual little girl, Vanessa, whose childhood was devastated by torture and abuse at the hands of her sadistic mother. Vanessa was nearly destroyed until she discovered a secret that ultimately saved her life.
From the age of 3, Vanessa lived in daily terror of her mother's unpredictable rage. If she was 'naughty', her mother would lash out at her – with beatings, torture, starvation and making Vanessa sleep in their garden's pigsty, tied up like an animal. Her mother said her punishments were God's revenge on her for being the devil's child. Her father lived in denial of her suffering.
When she was 6 years old, Vanessa's grandfather began to sexually abuse her – to her despair, aided and abetted by both her mother and grandmother. At eight years old, she then discovered that the 'mother' who hated her so much had adopted her as a baby and would never love her as her own.
At the most horrific times of Vanessa's abuse, she nearly lost all hope that she would escape her prison, until mysterious things started to happen to her that allowed her to fight back.
This is the story of how Vanessa survived a childhood that nearly destroyed her and how her secret led her out of the horrors of her past.
