Richard Burton (EXORCIST 2: THE HERETIC, CLEOPATRA, THE SANDPIPER, HAMMERSMITH IS OUT) just before his death went out in a final blaze of glory portraying the life of the composer Richard Wagner. Only an actor of Burton’s sublime abilities could give stature to the life of a great composer who was also a megalomaniacal, manipulative, devious, under-handed, hate-filled little slimebucket. For the first time in ages Burton brings life to a role and doesn’t look like he wishes he were somewhere else. The film also features Sirs John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson and Lawrence Olivier as members of the court of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Wagner’s single greatest patron, a poor illusional day-dreaming soul who was enraptured with the man and almost single-handedly built and financed the first Bayreuth Festival: that’s how powerfully the composer affected just about everyone he met, sort of an early L. Ron Hubbard. Director Tony Palmer lights just about every scene in half-darkness with only hints of light: sometimes characters or settings are in darkness. Of course, Wagner's music plays throughout, overwhelmingly majestic; there’s no subtlety to Wagner. From the Revolution of 1848, through endless years of exile and wandering from one place to another, the composing of TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, DER MEISTERSINGERS, and the RING CYCLE, friendship with Nietzsche, and finally the founding of the Bayreuth Festival, which exclusively devotes itself to Wagner’s operas and the family continues the tradition to this day - this is a seven-hour German-made miniseries and it’s worth almost every minute. It also covers a good portion of Nineteenth Century German history - the uniting of numerous independent kingdoms into one mighty nation - of which Wagner figured as a leading nationalistic and almost spiritual as well as cultural founder for many decades up until the end of the Second World War. Interestingly, the series makes no attempt to cover up his virulent anti-semitism or his hatred of anything that wasn’t German, features that unfortunately had their effect on Adolph Hitler. Wagner’s only interest was art, art, art, and he believed himself to be the vanguard of a revolutionary new structure of opera, “Opera of the future” as he described it in his typically egotistical dramatic way. Watch this series both for the performances and an insight into the life of one of history’s most fascinating personalities.

There are two versions of this epic. The short version and the long version. This is the long version. It stars Richard Burton as the composer. He is sometimes wonderful, sometimes doing a passable reading of lines. He was too old for the younger version of the composer, and not at all charismatic. In fact, he makes Wagner a frustratingly unsympathetic person. Your opinion about this production will hinge on whether you like Burton or not. The locations are real and feel just right. Gielgud, Richardson, and Olivier are all in this. Vanessa Redgrave is in this. Production design is first-rate. The awful man versus the genius composer makes for a fascinating drama. His sexual escapades are fully in place. The singing is by the reigning Wagerians of the time: Jess Thomas, Peter Hoffmann, Gwyneth Jones, and others. Wow! Solti provides the conducting for the background music (all Wagner, of course), and the operas. Someday people will realize that showing an actor flailing their arms around "conducting" is inaccurate. Hans von Bulow was a great conductor, but the undisciplined arm waving that is to pass as "impassioned conducting of Tristan und Isolde" is just ludicrous.

What I enjoyed about this epic series on the life of Richard Wagner was the composer's music performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra (
Wagner: Opera Scenes
), Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (
The Vienna Philharmonic Plays Wagner
) and Budapest Symphony Orchestra (
Masters of Classical Music, Vol. 5: Wagner
) under the baton of Sir Georg Solti. The backdrop of political and social intrigue in the Prussian and Bavarian states of the 19th century piqued my curiosity for the history of this period as well. No less fascinating were the characterisations of the people who played significant roles in his life, including Franz Liszt, Frederick Nietzsche, Hans and Cosima von Buelow, Minna Planer, Mathilde Wesendonck and King Ludwig II. Equally memorable were the excellent performances of Richard Burton as Wagner, Gemma Craven as Minna (his first wife) Vanessa Redgrave as Cosima (his friend's wife and second wife), Laszlo Galffi as

Richard Burton's performance is indeed superb in so far as depicting the arrogance, megalomania, amorality and musical genius of Richard Wagner. While "Wagner" depicts a vile and self-centred man, especially with regard to the callous disregard he had for friends, wives, benefactors and peers, the film projects a balanced assessment of his contribution to the world of music and influence on German politics. On viewing "Wagner", one might actually have more sympathy for the people he used, particularly the romantic and generous benefactor King Ludwig II. With regard to Kultur's pan and scan presentation of this acclaimed series, I concur with the previous reviewers. I wish Kulture had made a genuine effort to digitise and include some historical write-up on Wagner and the film's making. Nevertheless, this 4-DVD set is testimony to Burton's talent, the lavish sets, the detailed costumes and marvellous scenery shot in more than 200 locations around Europe. Whether the scenes purportedly snipped from the original series make a difference is a matter of personal preference. I for one found the footage viewed on this DVD set did not disturb the overall story. However, parents viewing this with children, be warned; the film is rated 'R' for some frontal nudity and sexual situations (3 scenes). Regardless, "Wagner" is a film worth watching, if not owning.

Wagner - a great composer
The video os good and lives up to expectations. Having the delivery from the States when ordered from Canada and shipped via UPS certainly added allot to the actual purchase price $60 more.

Richard Wagner the nine hour DVD epic
Condition was excellent, as it was stated to be. Sound quality is fine. Not a fault of the seller, the DVD image resolution is more like that of a VHS tape, not impressive on a state of the art 50 inch flat screen! The chronology of the presentation is somewhat difficult to follow due to trying to edit 80 hours of raw filming down to nine. There are frequent flash backs and more vexing flash forwards, some repetition and emphasis on only a limited number of Wagner's works.
