Especially when it comes to the potentially harder-to-discuss dermatological concerns of the vulva. The good news is that you've got a lot of tools at your disposal to prevent or treat pesky irritations like vaginal chafing. "During the last few years, because of the popularity of spin classes and stationary bikes , I've actually seen a lot more chafing of the vagina and vulva area," she says.
Chafing is caused by friction and moisture, either skin-to-skin or skin-to-another surface, says Dr. Dweck. This is why spin class is a major culprit of vaginal chafing, but Dr. Dweck reassures that it doesn't mean you should stop going.
Part of the problem with chafing is that there are varying moisture levels, which means that there's wetness or sweat that can dry into stickiness. Stickiness, either from sweat, discharge, or menstruation, can cause increased friction. The way to prevent all of these frustrating features of the laws of physics is moisturizing and lubrication.
This means adding balms between your thighs, so they don't chafe, and a vaginal-appropriate topical moisturizer or even lubrication before a high friction activity like walking or spinning, says Dr. Dweck. Additionally, staying hydrated throughout the day can prevent uneven perspiration, which can lead to that pesky stickiness.
When you start chafing, it will not usually solve itself on its own and will likely become painful. You know your body best, so there's a difference between a pesky underwear lining and full-on chafing. When full-on chafing is occurring, it's best to stop the friction, rinse the area with clean water, or cleanse with a clean damp washcloth. If the skin is brokern, talk to a care provider about topical creams that might help with wound care.
Anatomically speaking, the vagina is within the labia minora (inner lips), which are within the labia majora (outer lips). The most common areas that experience chafing, in Dr. Dweck's experience, are the inner thighs, between the thigh and labia majora, or between the labia majora and minora. The literal vagina is protected by these features of the vulva's anatomy, but it still can experience chafing . Penetrative sex with a hand, penis, or dildo can all rub against the sensitive skin in such a way that chafes and leaves it sore the next day. This is normal and not a cause for concern, but Dr. Dweck recommends you use more lube throughout your sexual activity to prevent this.
Chafing can be so frustrating and kind of hard to talk about. It totally happens to everyone, though, and there are a lot of tools for prevention at your disposal.

Moisture + Friction + Heat = Chafing (aka “chub rub”).
You could be having a peaceful sleep, a morning jog, a casual stroll, enjoying a summer vacation, or playing a sport and there it comes — your skin and clothes feel like two pieces of wood rubbing together. And it burns! It’s painful to say the least.
More so when it happens to a very delicate part of your body like the vulva. This is called vaginal chafing: an irritation on the vulva usually caused by sweat, friction, and possibly pelvic floor dysfunction.
We’ll talk more about this condition and the most effective ways to cool the burn and put the fire out!
Note: Although the vagina and vulva (the outer part of the female genitals) are different, for the sake of simplicity, we will refer to the vulva as the vagina in this blog.
Chafing is mainly caused by repeated friction (through skin-to-skin or skin-to-material contact) and moisture, especially during warm weather. It can also be triggered or worsened by:
Running, jogging, bicycling, sports, and rough sex, for example, may cause chafing on different parts of your body because of repetitive motions and sweat.
Ill-fitting underwear or any piece of clothing may rub too hard on your skin causing irritation.
excess weight may also increase the likelihood of skin rubbing and irritation.
Nursing moms may experience skin chafing due to moisture on the nipples and wearing a nursing bra. If you’re experiencing sore breasts read this.
Diapers, sanitary napkins, and scented pads may also cause chafing because of trapped moisture, especially if it’s made of low-quality materials or not changed properly. Douching and toilet paper can also be at fault.
Although this is the least likely cause on the list, it’s highly possible for women with prolapse to experience chafing. This condition is more common in new mothers (called postpartum prolapse). Some women consider surgery for their prolapse because of how it affects their daily life, but we highly discourage prolapse surgery due to its many risks and high rate of recurrence .
Is Vagina Chafing a Serious Condition?
Vaginal chafing alone is not a fatal condition. However, it can progress to a more serious skin condition or infection if there’s an open wound or if it’s left untreated.
You may be wondering “Is chafing a yeast infection?” The simple answer is no .
Vulvar irritation is only one of the many symptoms of yeast infection.
• Soreness or rashes in the vagina (vulva) that are hot, itchy, or painful • Burning sensation during sex or urination • Vaginal discharge that is watery or resembles cottage cheese What Is The Difference Between Vagina Chafing and Intertrigo?
Intertrigo is an irritant dermatitis that occurs mostly on two closely opposed moist skin surfaces (ex. armpits or under the breast crease). Like chafing, it also breaks down the top layers of the skin through rubbing. But intertrigo causes inflammation, rashes, and tender patches from bacteria or fungus.
Simply put, intertrigo is a serious health issue and chafing can be one of its symptoms.
An unhealthy diet, Vitamin D deficiency, certain medical conditions (such as diabetes or human deficiency virus infections), and excessive sweating are some of the factors that may increase your risk of developing intertrigo.
Although you have no control over some factors that increase the chances of vaginal chafing like hot weather or sweating, there are simple steps you can do to keep yourself less susceptible to it:
• Change wet clothes or underwear immediately • Take a warm shower after a workout • Wear cotton panties or none if possible (especially at night) • Invest in proven and tested anti-chafe creams • Maintain a healthy weight • Control sugar intake (especially if you have diabetes) • Practice good hygiene • Keep your pubic hair trimmed
The old adage “prevention is better than cure” still holds profound wisdom when it comes to vaginal chafing. But in case you’re already experiencing chafing, don’t fret, there are lots of ways you can heal it!
But first, you need to find out the underlying cause and from there, you may refer to your doctor for appropriate remedies.
• Using moisturizer • Using lubrication (especially during sex) • Taking oatmeal baths • Taking antihistamines • Using anti-itch or anti-chafing creams or ointments • Applying cold compresses to the affected area for 5-10 minutes • Washing your genitals using warm water and or very gentle soap
At the same time, here’s what you need to avoid. The 3 DON’TS:
• Do not soak the chafed skin in hot water or harsh, fragrance body soap. • Never use hydrogen peroxide as a disinfectant. • Avoid using hot or warm compresses. How about baby powder Generally, baby powder falls short in 3 aspects: prevention (only effective for a few minutes or hours), cure (there are better treatment options), and safety (arguably, some studies associate talc (a mineral and baby powder’s main ingredient) to ovarian cancer and other health issues when inhaled). Not to mention, anything foreign applied directly to your vagina comes with risks.

Home Intimate Health Feminine Hygiene Suffering at the hands of chafing down there? Here are 5 tips that can help
Chafing happens to almost everyone, and while there’s nothing to worry about, it doesn’t mean you have to sit back and endure the pain! It can happen anywhere where there’s skin-to-skin contact, but one of the most common areas is the vaginal area.
The major cause of chafing is the combination of sweat and friction, and if you’re someone who is physically active, we’re sure you’ll have to deal with this uncomfortable situation from time to time. Chafing can range from mild to extreme with just redness and irritated skin, to bacterial or yeast infection, so it’s important to keep a check on it from the very beginning!
And even if you are not that physically active, certain things like the fabric of any cloth can cause chafing. You never know when these tips come handy, so keep reading!
As mentioned above, the biggest cause of chafing is the combination of moisture and friction. So, here’s how you can avoid it:
1. Keep yourself clean Start with the easiest thing, and that means you must take a proper bath every day. Daily activity leads to the build-up of dirt, and sweat in your thigh area, which is called thigh grime. This causes chafing, so bathing after a vigorous physical activity is always important!
If for some reason, you aren’t able to bathe, try to clean the sweat and dirt with the help of a clean cloth or wipe.
2. Use a powder We all know powders are great when it comes to absorbing moisture. If you have a baby powder lying around, you can use it to apply around your groin area to prevent any build up of moisture. But make sure you aren’t using cosmetic powder or any other powder that is heavily perfumed.
3. Apply an anti-chafing cream Anti-chafing creams are a type of lubricants that prevent friction. So if you are someone who is way too active physically, then keeping one handy can help you avoid all the pain that comes with chafing!
If you don’t have an anti-chafing cream or have run out of them, then petroleum jelly can also be used. Although it is inexpensive, it’s a little messy. So, see what works best!
4. Keep your pubic hair trimmed Sometimes the hair down there can make chafing worse, so keep your pubic hair short and trimmed . But make sure you are not shaving them completely as it can make the situation even worse. Shaved skin makes the skin bare and more prone to chafing.
5. Skip underwear at night Wearing underwear all the time is a good habit, but going commando at night is okay. When you are wearing underwear your most delicate skin is protected from the rubbing of any external material. But make sure you choose the right kind of fabric for your undies . Cotton fabric is hands down the best, so ditch all the other ones!
Aren’t these tips super simple? Follow these and keep chafing in control, ladies!
