An British museum which bills itself as “the worlds’ first bricks and mortar museum dedicated to the gynaecological anatomy” decided to honor International Women’s Day by focusing on biological men, tweeting proudly, “This #InternationalWomensDay we’re going to talk about trans women in history.”
The Vagina Museum wrote defensively, “We’ve turned replies off, because we know some people would prefer these stories to be erased and silenced.”
“We’ll start with some housekeeping,” the museum continued. “Across time and space, gender has been constructed in various ways. We discuss queering the past in our podcast episode Trans Saints And Gay Vikings, which you might like to listen to. We’ll also say that some of the stories we discuss contain discrimination and transphobia. This is, sadly, a recurring theme in the stories of trans women and transfeminine people throughout history, and which persists to this day.”
After citing numerous examples, the Vagina Museum concluded, “We’ll conclude this thread with a quote from @queertyyr in the podcast episode at the top: ‘Queer people and trans people have always existed and we will always exist.’”

The Vagina Museum explained how it came to be : “There is a penis museum in Iceland. Which is pretty cool. But there is no vagina equivalent anywhere in the world. We were pretty miffed (muffed?) when we learnt this but we thought, there’s only one way to rectify this. Make one.”
The museum states its mission is to “Spread knowledge and raise awareness of the gynaecological anatomy and health; give confidence to people to talk about issues surrounding the gynaecological anatomy; erase the stigma around the body and gynaecological anatomy; act as a forum for feminism, women’s rights, the LGBT+ community and the intersex community; challenge heteronormative and cisnormative behaviour; Promote intersectional, feminist and trans-inclusive values.”
Social media had some thoughts of its own on the Vagina Museum’s choice of what to honor on International Women’s Day.

The world's first bricks and mortar Vagina Museum is reopening at a new home in Bethnal Green this very weekend (March 19).
So, there happens to be a penis museum in Iceland, but what about the vagina? Well, Florence Schecter set out rectify this problem (and obvious gap in the museum market) a few years ago, by running her own pop-up workshops and sessions here in London. After a long crowdfunding process, The Vagina Museum officially opened for business in Camden Market, with the grand launch in November 2019. Now, having now outgrown their Camden home, they’ve found a brand new site in Bethnal Green, and they’ll be open from tomorrow ( March 19) .

You’ll find them over in Victoria Park Square next month, taking a holistic view of vaginas; the people and animals that have them, whilst highlighting cultural issues surrounding them too. The concept is all about educating everyone on topical issues such as FGM, the basic science of the vagina, and basically showing everyone how fab it generally is. Sounds great, but what’s even better is that the museum also offers free collections and exhibitions, paid evening events, and community outreach opportunities too.

Expect to be educated on the science, culture and history of the trusty vagina whilst simultaneously going to concerts, workshops, comedy nights and plays. Who knew the vagina could be so arty?
At the Camden site, the Vagina Museum ran quizzes, comedy nights, and crochet classes since opening, along with their first exhibition: Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How To Fight Them. We’ll definitely be expecting more of the same at their new home! Honestly, this place is a treasure trove of information that you won’t have been taught in Sex Ed classes.
Plus, you know, any place that promises vagina cupcakes and a gift shop with vagina merchandise – think vagina pendants and ‘Merry Muffmas’ Christmas cards – has already won us over!
